Personal Narrative: My Hair Journey

Why This Year Is the Time To “Let Go”

More and more we see it happening. Naturals who’ve been on a hair journey for years big chopping for a second or even a third time. Sometimes, it’s due to damage but at other times it’s been “just because”. Whatever the reason, they show us that we need not be afraid of a fresh start. Mel a.ka. @rockyorizos recently decided to start her natural hair journey anew and shared a bit of her past, present and future with us.

How long have you been natural and what was the catalyst behind you starting a natural hair journey?

I have been natural for a looong time (my last relaxer was when I was 13 years old) and the catalyst behind me starting a natural hair journey was when the Spice Girls first came to the

The length of my hair before my recent big chop was about shoulder length.

What was your long hair regimen like?

My long hair regimen was pretty simple since I was a "wash and go" girl. I would wash my hair weekly with Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Anti Shrinkage shampoo and deep condition with a concoction of olive oil and mashed avocado that I would make. I used Sebastian Potion 9 mixed with Ecostyler gel and either jojoba or grapeseed oil mixed as my styling concoction. I would air dry as often as I could but when I was pressed for time I would diffused my hair with low heat until it was dry and blast it with cold air to finish the process.

Why did you decide to chop all your hair off?

I decided to chop off all my hair because it was time to start over. I was experimenting with different hair colors which damaged my hair but also, I ultimately I was transitioning as a person and I felt like I wanted to start from scratch and not bring any old energy into that process.

During that time I shared how I downsized my apartment, I edited my circle of friends, made an effort of being more considerate to my family members and giving them quality time, and finally, chopping my signature curls. I was extremely grateful that it was well received but I noticed that so many women and men were going through similar situations and they related it to their hair! I received soooo many heartfelt emails and messages from those that did not want to share publicly and they all expressed how I had inspired them to finally let go of things and situations that have held them back for years! To this day I am humbled and I quickly learned it's ok to be vulnerable and share your story because you never know who you are influencing.

Coco Chanel once famously said “a woman who cuts her hair, is about to change her life”. Are you in need of a change? Let not fear stand in your way. Hair will grow back, but cutting it might just be the start of the new beginning you seek.

"Wash your hair at the start of your shower (making use of a 'detox hair shampoo' if you have actually been swimming in chlorinated water) and after that effectively massage some conditioner in," recommends Davies. "Then, remain to shower and permit the conditioner to do its task-- this recovers your hair's wetness and it'll look 10 times much better later on, particularly if you have actually been out in the sun and sea all the time.". Celeb hair stylist Jamie Stevens recommends going a step additionally: "I constantly recommend my customers to exchange their conditioner for a masque throughout the summertime. Hair masques and treatments are much thicker in their consistency and they permeate much deeper into the hair roots.".…

Cut the lace wig and pre-bond double-sided tape to fit the hairline; then place it in front of your natural hairline covering the whole perimeter of your head. Initially, I thought cosmetology school was going to be easy, since my desire for it was so strong. They had a structured the program for us to learn something different each month and we would practice on a daily basis on another classmate or mannequins. We spent our first month learning basic cutting techniques so we could create the foundation of the hair to be styled. One of my favorite subjects was studying the background of color. I had always wanted to color my hair, but after my traumatizing experience using relaxers, I was hesitant to put anything on my hair at home without knowing how to protect my hair from damage.…

I had even went blonde for a month, dyed it black, then bleached it back to blond a month later. Of course this led to several intensive months of deep conditioning and cold showers and I didn't want to ruin my hair any further than the extensive damage had already done. To say the least, I have had many hands on experiences with hair and I've come to the conclusion that I want to pursue a solid relationship with beauty and self-care myself. Because of that, I want to place myself in a stimulating environment that engages me and lends me the opportunities that I have been looking for to educate me and form a base for a career beauty field. My biggest life goal and I aspire towards most is to find something I would enjoy while being comfortable doing for the rest of my life.…

The hair that grows afterwards may take longer to grow, and when it does it is usually curlier or thicker or might even have a different color. Overall, whether you trim, brush or shave the child’s hair, know that it won’t affect the hair that grows in. This is all dependent on the…
