Personal Narrative: My First Time In Miami

Improved Essays
My first time in Miami was December 4, 2009. It was a winter morning, but in Miami there wasn’t a hint of coldness in the air. When we first received the news that we were leaving Cuba everyone was excited and when the day finally arrived it was a little less thrilling and a little more somber. Leaving everything behind and moving to a new country was difficult and leaving a lot of our family was worse. “This is for you and your sister’s future” my parents said when we arrived in Miami I believe they were trying to persuade themselves more than us. I know it was painful for them to leave everything they had always known behind, it was tough for us too, but I was 10 and my sister 14 we were kids, the impact of such a decision didn’t hit us until …show more content…
My sister was exactly like me except she was 14 years old in 8th grade and teenagers are ruthless. One day when I was home the phone rang and after hanging up I heard my mom say, “Your sister isn’t feeling good Norma is picking her up.”, “Of course she doesn’t feel good” I said to myself, “she doesn’t want to be here with these strangers who she has nothing in common with”. Do you know that feeling when you don’t understand a language and suddenly you feel like everyone is making fun of you? Well we lived in that feeling I don’t remember what they said and they could have been talking about anything else but it always felt like someone was saying “Doesn’t she look stupid?” “Her family is probably really poor” but then again, they could’ve been talking about their weekend or their dogs. Later, after some time had gone by and we had made some friends things were looking better my parents had their own jobs and me and my sister were going to school and learning English and that’s when we abandoned our bubble and started realizing how beautiful Miami truly is. There are so many different cultures and so many different people that it doesn’t feel like you’re so far from

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…

The Midwest is home to states with rich cultural backgrounds and popular tourist attractions. To take a break from the busy schedule I have as a student, and to avoid writing more essays like this, I went on a vacation to Michigan with my mother and two siblings. We visited South Haven, a pleasant port city on Lake Michigan’s east coast, and Detroit, the famous largest city in Michigan. These areas interest me because there’s plenty to do; there are amazing restaurants, breath-taking scenery, and family-friendly, inexpensive entertainment. South Haven is famed for its relaxed atmosphere and homely feel.…

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

From the moment I read the title of this week's reflection, I knew that I was going to be able to relate to the plot. No, growing up in modern day Miami in a family of five does not compare to growing up in times of segregation in a family of eight. Although our lifestyles may be different the struggles of the main character could be related to. The main character of this passage lives in a neighborhood where some are living comfortably by being members of the middle class and others are barely making ends meet while being members of the working class. As she is explaining the layout of her neighborhood and comparing and contrasting her neighbors’ lifestyles, I'm lead to believe that she is making a choice of whether she wants…

The five hours drive in Pensacola was the longest five hours drive in all the traveling I’ve done. When my dad was driving to Pensacola I felt nervous doing to much thinking but my dad gave me encouragement saying just do me. My games in Pensacola were bad to me because I didn’t have any points, I think I’m the only one on my team who had zero points the whole weekend. I barely had any playing time even when I did a good job on both ends of the court. Most people say it’s not all about points but it is about points because how can you win with zero points it’s impossible.…

One of my roommates in college was gay. He confided in me about his sexual preference, knowing I’d respect his confidence. Back then, gay people were openly ridiculed and rejected and attacked. I wish I could say this was no longer true, but obviously I can’t. We’ve come a long way, but what happened in Orlando and the reaction to it provide harsh reminders of how people hate those who are different from them in some way.…

The booming voice called out for my little family of four to board our plane, a plane that would take us to the depths of a mysterious alien world. Or at least that’s what little six-year-old me thought when I left my home country of Cuba to come to the United States. That was a time of emotional turmoil for me, feeling the pain of leaving everything and everyone I knew behind. There was the excitement and fear of coming to a new unknown place, but there was also a feeling of dread at this vast language barrier that I was facing, and finally accepting and adapting to this new life. Coming from Cuba was a difficult experience that helped me grow and learn.…

We had to get to the airport as quickly as possible, because our flight leaves at five o’clock in the morning. Even though I was mad doing this I still enjoyed it because we were on our way to Florida!!This is great practice because one day I will have to do this again.…

From smelling the salty waters by the Florida Keys, seeing all of the green from the stems of green beans growing, the flavor of the freshest eggs you could get from the coop in the backyard, to the avocado tree growing in the backyard, my trip to Florida had become one of the greatest life experiences I’ve had yet. Visiting Florida taught me many skills on being independent, mentally, and how easy and fun it is just to be to yourself sometimes. It all started Christmas eve when I got home to find my presents from “Santa” there before we even went to bed. My parents had planned on taking a vacation to Florida for Christmas break to see my grandparents, but we were unable to also get my parents there.…
