Personal Narrative: My First Sergeant

Public Speaking in Action
I have decided to write about my First Sergeant who will remain nameless. Since arriving at Al Udeid AB, I have had a lot of interaction with my Shirt. From one on one discussion to being a member in the audience that he is briefing, the interaction level has varied. In my opinion, he is a great public speaker and I do not have any major criticism thus far. However, nobody is perfect so I will be talking about his key strengths and weaknesses that I have noticed over the past two months. My First Sergeant has so many strengths that I decided that I would begin with those. First off, my Shirt takes control of the room when he speaks. When I say that he controls the room, I mean that he does an excellent job of grabbing

I find him interesting to listen to and enjoy his briefings. His few weaknesses are minor compared to his strengths, but could still be fixed. Once I develop a better relationship with him, I may feel confident enough to mention the flaws I’ve noticed to him. I’m sure he’s already been told once or twice in his military career, but constructive criticism never hurts to be repeated. The one strength to my Shirt’s public speaking that I can relate to the most is the ability to command a room. The few times I have been given the floor to speak in public, I spoke with confidence and kept the volume of my voice at an optimal level while still capturing the attention of the audience. Even if I am not confident on the inside, I find that displaying confidence is key when speaking in public. The major flaw I share with my Shirt is the tendency to mumble when I get stuck pronouncing a difficult word. It doesn’t happen very often, but from time to time I come across a word that I struggle with. I know there will be many more opportunities to hear my Shirt speak and I look forward to watching him speak. I don’t consider myself a speech critic, but this assignment has opened my eyes to at least one speaker’s strengths and weaknesses. The next few times to possibly whenever I am in an audience, I will definitely be looking out for strengths of the speaker and paying attention to their weaknesses as well to

As LTC Owens, I am excited for the opportunity to command the 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT). After my initial assessment of the unit, I have a good feel for the brigade’s primary issues and look forward to the challenges ahead. I have divided the problems identified into four primary lines of effort: Build the Team, Training, Leadership Development, and Fortify the Team. These lines of effort comprise the essential tasks in meeting my vision for the brigade. My vision is: 4th ABCT is a disciplined, agile, and fit Armored Brigade Combat Team that wins every fight; professionally accomplishes any mission to high standards; cares for, and is empowered by, each other and our families; and honors its lineage.…

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

He then ends the speech trying to tie all this in to the current political climate, and talks about how if we can save ourselves we can save veterans. His speech while good was quite confusing as it constantly jumped from point to point, and he doesn’t signal his conclusion or really go over the points he covered, and how they connect. Some of the lessons I took from this speech are how to make subtle but important hand gestures like he did with his fist, that talking with a calm but strong voice is very effective at holding audience attention, that short pauses can be good for collecting your thoughts, and that when speaking to an audience try to move towards where you’re making eye contact, so the audience member feels like you’re talking to them…

The person I am today is someone that has had a great deal of life experience in the short amount of time that I’ve been here. I enlisted into the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and turned 18 the day I arrived to boot camp. I quickly had to learn what it meant to be responsible for those around me to include their welfare, their lives, and their families. I also developed strong leadership and management skills to accompany those skills in which are needed to be a successful Career Marine. I was also told that I should especially never want to work in 2nd Battalion of the 162nd Infantry (2-162 IN BN), which was the strongest of the two Infantry elements in the brigade. After working in the state Joint Force Headquarters for eight years, because no other person in my career field would take the position, I was asked to take one for the team, and join 2-162 IN BN, as their Senior Human Resources Noncommissioned Officer.
