Personal Narrative: My Field Experience At Mrs. Saoud's Class

I was fortunate to be placed into Mrs. Saoud’s class for the fifteen hours of field experience required in the Integrated Math & Science course. Mrs. Saoud is one of the First grade teachers at W.E. Cherry, a Title 1 school located in Orange Park. She is a dedicated, talented, and hardworking educator and she was eager to share with me as much of her knowledge as possible. Her organizational skills, attention to detail, and her ability to adapt to the circumstances allow her to deliver her teaching on what it may seem to an outside observer like an effortless manner. During the time I spent working in Mrs. Saoud’s classroom, I learned a great deal about teaching integrated Math and Science. Her thematic units were engaging and comprehensive and provided a wonderful opportunity to integrate multiple concepts throughout the school day. I was in her classroom during the following dates: October 11, 16, 17, 23, 24, 26, 27, and 30, as well as November 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 14, and 15. Over the course of my observation, Mrs. Saoud used several times a calendar instruction that she created. Her calendar incorporates skill-building math, social studies, and language arts concepts. Using worksheets inside clear plastic folders, students were able to practice math skills such as even and odd, ten …show more content…
Saoud’s class can be described as practical, engaging, and enriching. During my time in the classroom, I had the notion of witnessing fine teaching and learning a large amount of teaching tips. It was inspiring to observe Mrs. Saoud’s ease to overcome everyday challenges to deliver the best possible teaching. Her enthusiasm and dedication are contagious, so I am eager to put into practice the techniques I have learned from her. Reaching the end of my field experience was bittersweet since I felt very comfortable working with Mrs. Saoud and her seventeen students, however, I now feel better prepared to tackle my final internship next

It became evident that while Athena was confident in reading, writing and ordering numbers up to and beyond the thousands, which aligns with the Year 4 ‘Number and Place Value’ content descriptor in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics (ACMNA072), her lack of understanding about place value within a base-ten system meant that she could not interpret numbers comfortably in order to solve problems to align with (ACMNA073) (ACARA, 2016). While she knows the procedures for adding and subtracting numbers that bridge decades and hundreds and can show correct working out on paper, her mental strategies regarding place value needed practice. It was determined that activities in which manipulatives could support the mental strategies needed could help, as suggested by Burns (2004). The intention was to segue into this first by revising her understanding of two digit numbers and developing sense of number…

Themed weeks such as mathematics week with Mr Numerator and Green week enhances and supports the progress made by students. The 13 extra-curricular activities available is an outstanding aspect of the curriculum. Assessments in some lessons which is said to be the ‘better lessons’ by Ofsted is used well to ensure that pupils refer to their targets for improvement throughout the lesson and therefore is the cause of above expected progress. However, in other lessons assessment is not effectively used and so pupils are not encouraged to evaluate their own work nor are they aware of their progression and areas of improvement. The effectiveness of leadership and…

At the middle school level, units of study that can be integrated across multiple subject areas can be an effective method for increasing student understanding. Integrated units allow students to think and process information in a manner that is consistent with how they will think and process information when they are done with school. Life does not present people with a series of math problems followed by a series of English questions. In life, subjects are an interwoven tapestry that we all have to navigate (Wormeli 137).…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

The teachers switched classes from lunch until one thirty to better prepare the students for the test. In this way, they would learn the information through different teaching styles. This week’s task was about advice on the teaching profession. Some good advice was to stay organized and keep the students engaged.…
