Throughout life we all learn to read. Maybe on our own or maybe we were read to as a child. As a youth, I was not read to by a parent or grandparent. My brother Dale read to me when I was little as far as I can remember. Furthermore, when middle school began, I started reading on my own, but only one book made a lasting impression.…
Literacy Narrative The earliest memory I have of reading is with my grandmother at her house. When I was a toddler, she would read to me every time I spent the night with her. My favorite book for her to read to me was Three Little Kittens by Paul Galdone. I 'm not too sure why this was my favorite book, but my grandmother says that I "insisted on having it read to me" every single time I was with her. She would also read the Bible to me, which was quite confusing and complicated for a child to comprehend, but she explained the stories to me in a child-like format.…
Are You Reading Enough? I’ve always loved reading as long as I can remember. As I grow older I feel as if I’m drifting away from reading. The question is am I reading enough? Right now I don’t think I am.…
My first memory of reading was when I was little, about 4 or 5, and my mom would read to me when I was going to bed. By far my favorite book that she would read to me was “Where The Wild Things Are”. I loved the way the booked looked with the faded looking colors that made it look old and I loved the pictures of the wild things and how the kid was the king and everyone listened to him and I just loved it.…
By adding up the amount of pages that I read and dividing it by eighteen my answer is 75 pages per week. I saw an improvement in my reading because the number of pages I read in a week had increased. I am quite satisfied and this motivates me to read more. I want to tighten up my gear and raise it to at least 100 pages per week in order to achieve my wish. Usually I would have read books that are around 100 to 200 pages, but this time it is longer than usual.…
My Literacy Experience This map is all about how I as a reader and writer have changed over the years. At a young age, I was read books about cartoons. But later in the second grade of elementary, my teacher help me to improve my reading and writing skills and it was a life change event for me. She helped me to always read a certain amount of time a day in order to improve my comprehension of the text.…
Going through elementary school reading was always a struggle for me. It was challenging for me to fully comprehend what we were doing and reading in the class. Every friday I would go to see a teacher one on one to practice reading it involved being timed and having to tell her everything I had just read so that it would build up my comprehension. I remember feeling very embarrassed to be pulled out of class for extra help. Going through that didn't help that much, I was missing class…
I have been an avid lifelong reader. As a child, I would read under the covers, with a flashlight, or on long road trips. My family encouraged my love of reading. Often, I would receive books or "book money" as gifts. In particular, my father encouraged me to read science fiction and fantasy.…
The Dreaded Reading Class It was the first day of third grade. I jumped out of my moms car after kissing her on the cheek and hearing the routine “have a good day”. Jordy, my sister, and I walked in together reminiscing the previous years at Rising Star. Everyone was dressed in their favorite outfit to impress all their friends. Jordy and I fashioned our Limited Too dresses and sparkly back packs.…
I start to feel the nerves rushing; I begin to read ahead making sure I know all the words I’m about to read to the entire class. I keep looking around the class at all the posters that are telling me how to break down the sentence and paragraph. It was in this class that first made me feel ashamed and embarrassed of my struggle to read and write. I was in this class full of student who found the same subject hard, but my approach to this situation was different. My goal was to improve and be out of this class, everyone else seamed not to have a single worry about being in this remedial course.…
Being literate in something could always benefit you in some way or another. I used to think I wasn’t literate in anything because I would start something new and move on to something else It was never the fact that I was just quitting it was just that I got bored and didn’t want to suffer through it and my mom was okay with that, she told me to find something that I liked and made me happy. Then I realized that with everything I did I somehow always learned to do it fast and I settled with the fact that I am best at learning new things.…
There are many difficulties and struggles that a First Generation American student like myself experience on the daily. My main struggle is the language barrier with English reading and writing. Growing up with foreign parents was not the easiest thing, but ended up being worthwhile at the end. My first and native language is Polish. I had not learned the English language till I started preschool and that is where I learned it from.…
Bullets of sweat started running down my face as it is my turn to read a page from a book out loud to the class. Although the book was a simple elementary level book, to me it had the complexity of Shakespeare as I looked down at the words. For many kids my age reading skills seemed to come naturally to them, they could read through pages and pages without the slightest flaw. This made me question if there was something wrong with me or if I would ever be able to read as elegantly as others seemed too. If I wanted to be like the other kids it was going to take a lot of hard work and dedication on my part, so over the summer of fourth and fifth grade I did nothing but eat and breathe books.…
The first book that I remember someone, my mother, reading me is One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss. My mother would always read to me before bed. We would snuggle together, and I strongly believe that these experiences shaped me into the reader I am today. Also, I believed that it contributed to my love of reading. 2.…
Reading and writing are key necessities in life, perhaps in the most minuscule of ways. In many aspects, these skills are a must in most societies. We should always ask ourselves, “Is it enough?”. What are we doing to ensure that we teach our future generations the importance of them?…
