Experiencing something new can be frightening. One of the most nerve-racking experiences I’ve had was when I had surgery for the first time. One day over the summer I started to have pain on the right side of my abdomen. The pain was mild at first but it got worse.…
I started out in the instructional league and haven’t stopped playing since. When I reached middle school I really wanted to play for the school team. That year I did not make the team. This drove me to to work harder and practice whenever I could. That next year I made the team.…
I started to talk about how I started the game to my friends and we began playing with each other. I started off being so bad at the game that all my friends called me a noob (a gaming term that means someone is bad at the game). I thought to myself “should I quit or not?” “How should I get better” and “That I really should go find some nicer friends.” I didn’t want to be laughed at anymore so I watched professionals playing the game to gain vast knowledge of the game.…
As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…
The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…
With the honor to serve my country, on August 6, 1942, I Fern Tegrootenhula, left Ft. Devens, Massachusetts, and headed to Camp Grant, Illinois, for my two months basic training. During the training, we completed a 5-day field exercise in which we marched to the maneuver areas, and set up field kitchens, sleeping in pup tents. In addition, we worked with simulated casualties of all types which, helped by providing experience in diagnosis, and, treatment, including the transportation of patients in the field as well as, ward management. Our training included camouflage, cover and concealment techniques, defense against air, and mechanized as well as, chemical and airborne attacks, and the proper use of gas masks, as well as, map reading.…
The game has so many different aspects, I feel like it would take me months to figure it all out. I also do not fully understand the desire to build and sustain a fake empire in a fake universe. The game seems far too realistic. It reminded me of the stresses in real life. I want to play a game that helps me escape from the mundane aspects of adulthood.…
Exciting story to draw in audience and transition as to why this sparked my interest in becoming a PA. Imagine waking up one morning and looking into the mirror only to see an unrecognizable, aged face. You are in a foreign house with strangers surrounding you. They insist that this is your home, and that they are your family. You have an entire history of memories, but today you cannot remember the day or even the year.…
When I was younger I always looked up to my aunt. Wanting to do what she does, dressing liking her, and just being like her in general. She was going to school to become an RN. Well I was growing up i wanted to be a doctor or just something that helps people. I was to be a RN when i get older now.…
My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…
I think that everyone will experience a traumatic event in their life which will cause a division of their life into a before and after. However, I do believe that everyone that experiences a trauma will be scared. I have experienced many hurdles and have had my share of trauma however when I began to open up and recognize that these are not setbacks but rather the chance to accept and learn from these experiences I saw growth within myself. Through counseling as a young woman, I realized that it is best not to repress feelings although I thought I had conquered or resolved issues I realized during my undergrad there were still underlying emotions. Growing up in Detroit I experienced many things happening in the street and family members…
The truck was all set. The coolers were stuffed with cheesy sandwiches, soggy with their exposure to ice, and all the kids were seated and buckled with their faces engrossed to their oversized iPads. Money? Check. Strollers?…
As a lab assistant who is charged with data analysis, I spent three and a half weeks on digitized board angle data. A lot of my co-workers hated this job and they complained. But I had to come in everyday and digitized these data. This experience taught me that I am a patient and clam person and I could focus on my work with being disrupt by other people. I believed this personality would help me become successful in the medical field.…
Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…
The First Clinical Experience It was an early morning in April. My friends and I arrived 45 minutes early to our long term care facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. The three of us sat in my car and anxiously awaited stepping foot into the care facility as we had no idea what to expect. I began to wonder what the patients would be like and how I would care for them.…
