Personal Narrative: My Experience As A Clinical Assistant

In 2015, my family went through a financial hardship that led me to the decision of finding a part time job. I was done with all my clerkships by December 2014 and I was fortunate to be hired as a clinical assistant for a psychiatry clinic where I had completed my very last clerkship.

My employer agreed to give me a 20 hours/week schedule while I prepared for the Step 2 CK. My time at the clinic had positive and negative outcomes. On one hand, I gained a vast experience in the field of psychiatry, screening up to 20 patients a day and I even got three of my letters of recommendations from the psychiatrists who I worked with. On the other hand, soon after I started working, and despite our initial agreement of 20 hours/week, management began to ask me for up to 50 hours/week, including weekends. Thankfully, after 6

Quickly after I got my scores back, I took an NBME exam and the scores reflected similar results to my actual exam scores. In order to improve my scores I completed the DIT program, continued using UWorld and First Aid Review book. I took another NBME exam and my scores went up by 30 points which would have been sufficient to pass, but also too close to the cutoff numbers. Due to my limited time, I scheduled my second attempt for April 5, 2016.

The day after I got the results from my second attempt I subscribed to the ‘USMLE Success Academy’, an online preparation program, and I renewed my UWorld subscription. I also took another NBME exam which I will use to compare with another NBME exam that I will be taking at the end of the program. This online program gives me a detailed follow-up plan of action to take and pass the exam. Up to this day I have completed half of the program, and on June 15, 2016, I will be taking my end of the course NBME exam, which will serve as an indicator of my readiness to re-take the

My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

Preparing for this exam was unlike any other exam for me. I have recently accepted a job at Easter Maine Medical Center, as a nursing tech, and the hours of orientation have been challenging to balance with my studies. My new job has required even greater time management than I have previously implemented. I worked a thirteen-hour shift the day before the exam, worked immediately after the exam, and then completed an online midterm for my socio-cultural nursing class that evening. Although I have not received my exam grade, I felt very prepared and confident due to my strict time management.…

I would like to address my low MCAT score. When preparing for the MCAT, I was able to increase my scores on the practice exam to a 505. However, due to poor time management during the actual exam, I was unable to complete a majority of questions and answers on two sections. After receiving my rather devastating, but not surprising score, I immediately signed up to retake the exam at the next available date, as I was under the impression that my low score was the result of my lack of time management. While my time management improved significantly on the second attempt, and I was able to improve my score, the score was still not even close to what I had scored on my practice exams.…

The NCLEX exam is something that I am truly looking forward to taking. It is scary to think about how close I am to graduation and the next big step in my career is to pass my board exam. Some of my strengths when it comes to test taking over two years of practicing NCLEX style questions are: being able to critically think, reading the question and being able to identify what is being asked. Some of my weaknesses when it comes to test taking are time management. Although, I have tried my best to manage my time there are questions that require us to carefully analyze them.…

I think my greatest areas of strength on the practice GRE exam were the proportions and the geometry sections. I think that my recall for these sections was greater because the questions were more logic based and I have practiced similar math throughout my educational career. However, I think I performed most poorly on the written sections because I did not adequately prepare myself, and I did not really brainstorm for ideas as much as I should have. I also did not do so well in a few of the other math portions, partly because I was unfamiliar with some of the types of questions, and others I have completely forgotten how to solve because it has been a long time since I have had to take a math class. Overall, I really did not do as well as I feel like I could have if I had taken the time to review before taking the exam.…
