Personal Narrative: My Counseling Experience

Superior Essays
The summer before my senior year I began my first job. I was a counselor at a summer camp, called Camp Commotion. It took place at my church and was a 10 week program for kids in kindergarten to sixth grade. Being 17, I was the youngest employee of the 27 staff members, everyone else was in college or older. The camp was made up of a theater, gym, and 6 rooms for the different activities, like cooking, sports, crafts, etc. There was a front desk area and a staff lounge. I was excited to meet and build relationships with the kids and coworkers. Little did I realize that the job I had undertaken would affect my life on the level that it did. My goal was to be the best counselor there. It all began with training; Three days of learning the ropes …show more content…
It seemed like a great idea, for the exception of the fact that I cannot cook. It would also turn out to be the most dangerous of all the camps. I worked with Jennifer again, along with Alex who was very calm and humorous, and Stefanie, who was passionate and caring. Like Andrew I would work with Alex and Stefanie a lot that summer. Great people. The most memorable part of that week was when I got burned. It was pancake day. We had to make about 40 pancakes for the kids to eat. Since I was the only guy counselor in the group that week, I was tasked with making them on the griddles after the kids mixed the ingredients. I was moving the griddles over to the outlets to get ready for the batter. As I brought the second one over, i did not realize that someone from the previous week had left one of the griddles switched on. I reached down to move one over, to make space for the second. Grabbing the edge an immediate wave of pulsating heat ran through my fingers. The searing pain felt like it lasted for minutes, even though i let go immediately. Those few seconds were enough to had left a solid line running through my three fingers where skin used to be, scaring them. I still have those marks on my hand today. Along with my burn, someone else got cut with a knife. I was on my way to becoming a great

I was just roaming through the woods trying to find something to do, when a hazelnut caught my attention. I yanked the knife away from me and the hazelnut slipped out of my hand. The knife pierced my skin on the tip of my forefinger.…

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

This case presented a multitude of opportunities to think critically. The fact that triggers needed to be identified in a time sensitive manner presented the opportunity to explore options I was not accustomed to utilizing. I was given the suggestion by my supervisor to try either a narrative therapy approach or a cognitive behavioral, and in researching both I came to the conclusion that with this specific client narrative therapy would be more appropriate. Looking back, I believe I came to the most correct conclusion in regards to what modality to utilize. A personal challenge I experienced with this was never using narrative therapy in practice.…

I spent the next morning at the forest preserve with my camera glued to my face. I used the solitude as my own form of therapy, tying up all my emotions from the night before in a pretty little box and tucking it away in the back of my mind. Looking through the viewfinder calmed me, put everything right again and by the time I was on my way home I felt a million times better.
