Personal Narrative: My Clinical Community Service Observation

Improved Essays
I have chosen to perform my windshield survey on the neighborhood in the city of Hartford on which I will be doing my clinical community service rotation at a Immaculate Conception homeless shelter. This neighborhood is located on the southwest part of the city of Hartford and is part of the Frog Hollow neighborhood. I have visited this neighborhood two times since I have started my classes this semester and most of my visits have been done during the daytime. I what my sisters like to call “paranoid” so I do not feel safe driving to places at night that I don't know anything about it. The neighborhood is very busy and lots of people on the streets and it is a high traffic areas with lots of cars and busses around.

I did not notice many primary care providers’ offices in the area or any buildings that would indicate otherwise, but I did notice a building close by that has providers for the community but I am wondering how many patients they see in a day. There is a CVS type of pharmacy in the area that would give them access to a local pharmacist It they should have any questions on prescription medications. In the homeless shelter groups at least the one I will be working with there are social workers available to the community. I am not sure of yet if they provide help for just anyone or just the group I will be attending to. Although that will be very interesting to find out what kind of services are available to the community. I also observed some homeless shelters in the area making an easy access for places for people to stay and sleep specially during the cold winter months.
This neighborhood seem to be predominantly Hispanic population for the reason that I was able to observe that there are a lot of Hispanic restaurants in the area, making easy access to poor quality food. Most of the Hispanic foods include fried food, high carbohydrates foods and unhealthy amounts of sodium and fats in their cooking. On which this population have a high risk for developing

Within patients whom suffer from mental health there is an increase of alcohol and drug use. I believe this neighborhood has a high rate for drug abuse, having access to drugs with in the city is prominent specially since there is an increase in heroin overdose with many city within the state. Alcohol abuse is another serious issue in this community since I was able to notice lots of bottles found on the ground in the streets. Some concerns would be the lack nutritional values due to having lots of access to fast food restaurants and lack of housing, no grocery stores available in the area. I would also be concerned with home safety issues related to the high increase in homeless population and drug addicts, which lead to increase rate in theft and mortality

During these economic times, physical and mental health care has been decreasing. At the State level, California has faced significant funding shortfalls; forcing deep budget cuts in these critical support services (Sacramento Steps Forward). I went down to Sacramento, Loaves & Fishes homeless shelter and asked a few homeless people if they live near healthcare buildings to make it easier if they have health problems. Most of them said that they live near resources that are helpful to them. For example, one said that they like to hang around or live near the Del Taco in down Sacramento, because that is where other homeless people are at and some of them are his friends.…

The OACHC employs over 163 doctors, 39 dentists, and 220 nurses, while still remaining a successful non-profit. These are outstanding numbers considering that the OACHC operates in the areas that lack these professional skills, and demand the service in greater numbers. This is a major victory for the organization and for the communities that it serves. They are successfully disrupting the structure of disadvantaged neighborhood, and actively shrinking the physical distance between health care and the people who need it the most. Last year the OACHC was able to provide health care to over half a million residents, and recorded over two million patient visits.…

Like any other clinical experience, going into the Salvation Army I set goals for what I would achieve during my learning experience to focus my learning and enrich my knowledge base. My first personal goal was to go into the experience with an open mind and allow myself to learn more about this population and the people I would care for. This goal was achieved because I can talk about moments that I experienced that contributed to my growth of knowledge and awareness to this population. This goal was reached by sitting with multiple individuals over their meal and talk to them about their hardships and what they were going through. This allowed me to share my compassionate heart and listen to people who needed someone to talk to and hear about…

In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…

In order to improve population and community health, public health intervention, treatments, or initiatives must take into account the populations and communities social determinants (Shi, Hopkins, Tsai, & Kao, 2009). In the Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] (2008) report they listed a ton of successful programs that made sure that social determinants of that population would be addressed in order to better the community, I will discuss a couple. The first project is called Project Brave, which helped students off all ages realize what social determinants in there neighborhoods were the cause of the violent environment (CDC, 2008). This project was successful because they allowed the student to realize and accept what they were…

In the “Riverbend City: Urban Health Issues Mission” several health care issues, related to urban areas are encountered. The issues presented in this mission display the common problems that urban areas may face with lack of access to preventive or basic health care. A homeless man is portrayed as a frequent visitor to the emergency room for treatments for minor health problems, and also suffers from alcoholism. He eventual visited the department with more severe symptoms, that needed closer examinations, and that eventually lead to a diagnosis; that could have been prevented with preventive care or routine basic health care ("Riverbend City: Urban Health Issues Mission", 2016).…
