“How has your Christian spiritual journey influenced your professional and/or academic experience?”
While I grew up in a God loving home, I did not grow up going to church every Sunday. Nevertheless, I have come to realize that it was through my faith in him and realizing that we all have a purpose on this Earth that has influenced by academic and professional experiences. Being the first person in my family to attend college and graduate with a degree, it was particularly difficult monetarily for my parents to send me to college; however, my parents knew that it was in God’s plan for me to pursue a postsecondary education. It was through His grace that we obtained the funding for me to finish my degree in four years, even after we struggled

There are many stories told in my family. Anyone and everyone told them, some nights it would be my mom and other nights it would be my grandpa. There would always be two stories read; the first one would be from a book called “My Book of Bible Stories”. This book has so many pictures asks questions has descriptive words and is still one of my favorite books. After that story whoever was telling the story would make up a silly story usually about a blue or green man with a giraffe that went traveling and exploring (I have no clue why).…

“Our enemies have made the mistake that America’s enemies always make. They saw liberty and thought they saw weakness. And now, they see defeat.” George W. Bush stated this about the cowardly September 11th attacks. During that fateful day I was glued to my poorly constructed high school chair, gazing in disbelief what was unfolding on Mr. Cox’s History class television.…

My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. Being part of such a small community while heightening my sense of being has also made me more appreciative and understanding of other cultures & groups. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. My community has also enabled me to be a better communicator- as often times questions are asked regarding my ethnicity and religion where I can act as a spokesperson for the…

I was raised in a loving Christian family that has contributed to my personal values of acceptance, caring, and understanding. My parents continue to be great role models in my life and show me what it means to be a servant leader to the community. My father has been a high school football coach my whole life. As a child in south Florida, I watched my father extend his hand to many young Haitian refugees fleeing an oppressive government. Eyes of a Witness Have you ever asked yourself what you want to do with your life, and have you ever asked yourself what your purpose is in life? Also, have you ever asked yourself what path you should take in your life, and have you ever asked yourself where your journey should begin and end? And finally, have you ever asked yourself who God is and where God is? I have pondered these questions many times over and over again, and yet I have not been able to answer these questions. Nevertheless, I believe in my God, and I believe God has a greater purpose for me in my life.…

Growing up in a christian household, Christ was always present in my life. I was born in Bogota, Colombia where I would only live there for four years before coming to the United States. I had always heard the gospel at home, always eagerly attended sunday school and Vacation Bible School. But it wsn 't until my summer camp of 2012 when I heard a former wrestler talking about how our personal relationship with Jesus should look like, how he wants to be our best friend and the one we tell all our secrets to, the one we take counsil in; it wasn 't until that very sermon that I felt that unforgettable tugging in my heart. That day I knew what the gospel was really all about, it wasn 't the fascinating parables, nor the thrilling worship songs.…

My spiritual autobiography begins during my second year of high school and will cover about until the end of this class. There are many changes I went through during this period of time in terms of spirituality, and how I perceived the world. This autobiography will mainly focus on my transition from a catholic to everything else, and how I was able to use this experience to relate to Otto and Lauren and their own spiritual journeys. My journey began at St. Ignatius high school where we studied theology frequently which at first allowed me to be more immersed in Catholicism but soon I was just studying further into the areas where I disagreed with the church and the faith.…

On August 26, 2005, I gave my life to Christ, and it was the start of a whole new chapter of my journey. I still remember that night vividly in my head. The feelings of excitement, joy, and love were very tangible in my heart. My mom and dad were both sitting beside me on my bed while I was told the importance of this decision and how my life would never be the same. Even at 5 years old, I was aware of my decision to follow Jesus and accept him into my heart.…

The Holy Spirit is the most active and prevalent person of the Godhead in our daily lives (Smith, Importance). As believers, understanding the work of the Holy Spirit is important. “A Christian is one who has received Jesus Christ; a Christian is one who displays Christ living through his life, and this is accomplished by the work of the indwelling Holy Spirit” (Ryrie 9). As Christians, we can know the Spirit’s presence by witnessing it in our own lives (Swindoll 258). In my life, His presence can be characteristics to His roles as helper, guide, sanctifier, and comforter; He also blesses me with spiritual gifts to fulfill God’s purpose and to mature me while I am spending my time at Grace University.…

Most everyone that has ever lived has had some form of faith that they fall back on when they have doubts, or when they seek answers to questions that they may not be able to solve otherwise, and I am no different. I was raised in a pseudo-catholic household and I attended a catholic private school up until I went to high school. While most would expect this to shape me to some extent in a religious manner, that is not the case. I could never claim that that specific establishment had no effect on my outcome as an individual, but it did shape me in ways that were unexpected. Instead of imparting religious lessons they gave me solid moral groundwork, and instead of bible studies they gave me access to knowledge that I doubt I would have received…

When I first came to Dordt as a church shopping freshman, I became excited when I found out about the Church of Christ. Its website made it sound like its theology was the closest to the nondenominational church I grew up in, so I had it in my mind that this was the church I wanted to become a regular member of. One autumn Sunday morning, a friend and I put the address on the website into my GPS and set out. I was convinced that my GPS was malfunctioning when we ended up in the parking lot of a dark building that didn’t look like a church and didn’t even look like it was open.…
