Practice was all about conditioning, we didn’t touch a basketball for the first two weeks of practice. Our coach Chris Singletary would blow his whistle and we would start stretching. He would then yell, “Get on the baseline!” The team dreaded hearing that, we knew that, that meant running. We would do things such as, running ladders (a 8,6,4,2 and a 5,3,1: that was how many times we had to run down the court), foot fire, back peddling and so on. Our first game was going great, I played the entire game; scoring points, telling people where to go, and things a captain should do. Until the fourth quarter, the team fell apart. We went to being 20 points ahead to losing by 20 points. We hung our heads walking back to the locker room. The coaches were disappointed;
Coach Singletary yelled, “You better rest tonight, practice is going to be hell tomorrow.” The bus ride home was silent, however I made my way to the front of the bus to sit next to the coaches. I wanted to know what area I needed to improve on. Coach Singletary whispered, “Nothing you did great, we just need to work on plays to get you to score more.” I said back ,” Thanks, but I’m really not looking forward to practice
