My first duty station was is Mannheim, Germany where I took advantage of the train systems and traveled all over Europe. I went the Tulip festival in Amsterdam, Octoberfest in Munich and even attempted to ski in the Swiss Alps. I went shopping in the flea markets in Czech, I even spent two weeks traveling around Italy and spent Christmas at midnight mass in the Vatican. I’ve had the opportunity to work in the only men’s maximum security prison in the department of defense located in fort Leavenworth, Kansas. This facility houses some very infamous prisoners such as the controversial Chelsea Manning and the fort Hood shooter Nidal Hassan along with 500 other prisoners. During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

Little is know about my life until I enlisted into the military. I was well educated, and that helped me a great deal when it came to joining the Continental Army. I had most of my military training their and was later stationed at Fort Kaskaskia under Captain Russell Bissell. I later was transferred to Camp Dubois in Missouri where I, at the time, was in charge of 8 privates. From growing up in a military family, I have become very resilient and I adapt really well to change. With my surroundings changing all the time, I have to be able to quickly adapt to my new setting and find ways to fit in as quickly as possible. I have been to about twelve different schools so far, and I have lived in about eight different houses. When I live on a military base, change is constant, even if it is not my own family experiencing the orders to move that year. The houses around me fill and empty all the time with new people, and some of the military dominant schools I have been to have the same problem.…

Thorpe recounts what happened to Ms. Brooks, Ms. Helton and Ms. Fischer when their National Guard units were deployed. In doing so, she gave a dynamic understanding of what it’s been like for Guard members who unexpectedly found themselves shipped off to the front lines of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. She chronicles how these once ordinary civilians were abruptly transformed into full-time soldiers, and how they coped with the boredom and isolation and terror of serving in places where land mines and I.E.D.’s and roadside bombs were a constant threat. Michelle Fischer, who thought of herself as a “music-loving, pot-smoking, left-leaning hippie,” signed up because it would pay for college and enable her to live on campus. Debbie Helton, a beauty salon manager, signed up in the 1980s because she wanted to emulate her father, who had been an Army drill sergeant.…

When I was a Sailor first deployed to Afghanistan I was sent with medical supplies similar to those used during Vietnam. While on a foot patrol we came to a group of locals who had a boy with a open skull fracture, I secured the gaping hole with my basic gear ment for Marines. We escorted him to an Army combat out post hospital where an Army doctor questioned my gear and asked if I'd like an upgrade. He left and came back with a new med bag filled with new updated gear and gave it to me, saying this should help you keep more folks alive. I feel my experience with collaboration in that situation was awsome through inter-service provisions of medical care to those in need.…
