Personal Narrative: My Ability To Succeed In Higher Education

Decent Essays
The years I spent in high school leading up to college were challenging. Attending a low performing school with limited resources left me feeling unprepared and intimidated at the thought of enrolling at a university like Carolina. These feelings caused me to doubt my ability to even gain acceptance into the university, let alone succeed. Despite the uncertainty infecting my mind, I decided to give Carolina a try. Fortunately, through sheer determination and the resources offered here at Carolina I have overcome any doubts I have had about my ability to succeed in higher education.

I tried to tackle the college application process as honestly as I could. I knew I was not the smartest or the most talented applicant in a sea filled with thousands of application, but I knew I was unique. There was and still is only 1 me, Brian Bristol, on the entire planet. I used this knowledge to my advantage and did my best to convey my story to each college I applied to. Being transparent throughout the application process is underappreciated among high school students, and the fact that I was able to express myself was looked upon favorably by many colleges.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

My college search has brought me to many universities: visiting campuses, and talking to students, alumni, and faculty. While I could receive an excellent education from any of these schools, Notre Dame offers something "more. " I first noticed this something "more" through a contact I made with Kyle Cowdrick, ND class of 2015, who I have been emailing back and forth with over the last year about admissions, Notre Dame, and the college experience. I once asked him why he bothered to use his precious time to mentor me, someone he barely knew before, his answer: "It's the Irish way".…

Ever since Senior year has started, all the people in my grade have been receiving the “college talk” in classes and at home. No matter where we are, college is the topic. Even during lunch my classmates talk about it. Before I was calm about the topic of college, but ever since it’s been the topic around me 24/7, I can’t help but start to feel anxious. Usually I handle stressful situations well, but the idea of college and getting rejected has caused me to kinda freak out and worry about applying to schools.…

My first year of high school was winding down, teachers had covered all learning material, and most students were preparing for finals. June had just begun, and along with studying, I had an upcoming saxophone recital for which I had been preparing since April. The Tuesday before my recital, I had my second to last lesson with my teacher, Fred Scerbo, before the recital on Sunday. I was preparing a piece by Charlie Parker named "Anthropology". Despite its difficulty, I felt that I would be able to perform it well.…

Throughout this semester and this class, I have learned more than I thought I ever would. I took the same freshman seminar class at UNCW back in 2013, but did not really pay attention, and now I am paying for that. There are several things that I learned about myself through this class especially how close I am to achieving my Associates degree! I also learned that I am introvert throughout various personality tests, better ways for me to manage my time, studies, and work. The career that I would like to pursue would be a geologist or a sustainable development degree, (as I am still deciding), but these careers excite me because they involve the outdoors and ways to help people, the environment, and everything around us.…
