“We are moving to Wyoming” my mom said. A couple days into summer vacation the plan to move was finalized. At dinner that night the whole family agreed to then proceed with this new adventure. My mother had good reason, she said we would have access to a better education in Wyoming, it would reduce the number of times we commuted over Teton pass and it would help my father’s work be less stressful. The move, for me, was difficult, but I persevered through it and became stronger in the process. I can identify two life skills I used; values and independence.
My brother was graduating from the small independent school that we attended, started my parents reflecting on our future. The fact that my brother was headed to a subpar school system was the real kickoff. Idaho is 49th out of the 50 US states in education and my parents were not satisfied with that. My dad’s work was a gigantic factor in our decision to move. My dad is employed at the Old Folks Home at Saint John's Medical Center in Jackson. He had to get up at five thirty most mornings and he would return at nine PM. Moving to Wyoming meant that he would be able to awaken later and walk to work. It is time that I can waste in other ways. Another positive aspect is that I have acquired a whole new group of friends. New friends mean new opportunities, new possibilities and most of all a chance to start over. Our house is miniscule and we don’t have a yard. But on the plus side, our location in downtown Jackson is more convenient and we have the boulder park nearby. We are closer to the ski resort, therefore we can take the bus. Taking the bus saves fossil fuel, which is better for the environment. All these advantages add up and Jackson is a more fitting place for my
