Here I am today singing songs about the south-land;because I miss 'ole' 'bamy once again. Years ago I left my home state of Alabama, where the skies are so blue and I moved to the not so great state of Montana. Many people questioned me on why I moved to Montana, and my response back is because in that moment I felt like I needed a change, but in the end I think I made the wrong choice to move away from Alabama. But soon I will be back to sweet home Alabama,oh,Lord, I'm coming home to you. Back in early March of 1974,I was working at a local convenience store.…

As a young armadillo growing up in Texas during the 1820s, my life was peaceful and happy. The Federalists who held power in Mexico left me, my fellow armadillos, and the Anglo Americans alone to enjoy and work the land. However, in 1829, the Centralists gained control of the Mexican government and the freedom we enjoyed gradually eroded. As the Mexican government imposed more regulations on the Anglo Americans, the tension which had existed between the two groups due to the Nacogdoches land grant, become even more palpable.…

Brownsville, Texas is the town that I was raised in and can still call home. It was rich with Mexican culture and delectable, greasy tacos but it was still an economically disadvantaged city meaning that there were never enough resources to guide students to better opportunities. Of course, I never knew I was deprived of such an apparent luxury until I came to The University of Texas at Austin. When this realization came, I became frantic because of how behind I felt. I began looking for all sorts of resources and opportunities the university had to offer.…

Coming to Houston from a country where opportunities are very limited and economy is a challenge for the youthful, has made the last two years a little rough and hopeful at the same time for me and my family. Therefore, school is the most important in my life, after my family; I dedicate my time and my efforts to not become just the first professional in my family, but also to be an exemplary person in society thanks to the values that my parents have instilled in me. Before coming to Houston, I studied three years of Industrial Design in Colombia; although I loved my career, I think that I was too young (15 years old) to appreciate what school was providing me and to be sure what I wanted to do in life. Once I got here I understood that what…

Since I was born, I have lived in Laredo; throughout, my time here Laredo has grown tremendously along with the community here. Recently I turned eighteen and recalling back all those years is nostalgic, but gratifying at the same time because in those years I have been able to grow along with my family. As mentioned before, I have lived in Laredo my whole life and although the majority may dislike Laredo for their own reasons it has truly been a blessing for my family and I since the day we arrived here. To begin with, my parents moved here before they had even gotten married, solely for the reason of a better future as well as opportunities for themselves and their families.…

I’ve had three big moves in my life that had been hard for me, but not as much as this recent big move to San Antonio. It was a sunny, humid day in Edinburg, Tx and I was texting my best friend Mariela while she was home sick when my Mother texted my brother, sister and I that we were moving to San Antonio. I instantly became so full of anger because my mother wanted to move us away again after only moving to Edinburg six years ago.…

The traces in my mind of my life in Tennessee escaped my thoughts as the salt water breeze took them away. The blankets of snow, that I once knew, turned into white grains of sand that coated the steps of every shop and the bright green blades of grass were now blue curves of water that left me in a trance with every movement. Each house by the shore was painted a different bright color and was home to a collection of beach related trinkets, including broken shells, used as decor, and sand filled jars which were left by past visitors. A hammock was hung on the top story which became my safe haven of fresh air and solitude. Each morning I swung to the slow, crashing of the waves as the sun began to rise.…

MOVING FROM STATE TO STATE TO STATE (only 3 times but 4 different houses) (this is also partially my life story) I was born in Salt Lake City, UT. Before moving in with him, my mother had raised me in a Hispanic community; now moving to El Paso, I had to get used to a very Americanized neighborhood. Shortly after my eighteenth birthday, I found myself spending a great deal of time escaping a less-than-desirable reality by playing internet role playing games. There was a realization within myself that I needed a change of scenery, so I gathered a few of my prized possessions, purchased a bus ticket and left shortly thereafter to visit a good friend in Texas. What was intended to be a quick turn-around trip turned into the next three years, and little did I know just how much this trip would affect the rest of my life. Moving to Texas was an experience that taught me about the environmental differences between places, added responsibilities and the importance of having caring people in my life.…
