Personal Narrative: Moving To My First Event

Dedication.
It’s 5:50 pm and I am just arriving at practice. I am 20 minutes late so I have to warm up by myself. I jog back and forth along the runway for about 5 minutes and stretch for 10 before I jump in with the rest of the group. We split up and move to our first event. After the coach tells us what we will be doing for our first event, we start with three main passes. The first being a front handspring step out front handspring. Next, a front tuck and press handstand with a full pirouette. Then, a round off back handspring back tuck. For the next 30 minutes we slowly work towards the full routine.

Rotating to our second event, I put my grips on before we start on the bars. I start with a back uprise and pirouette going into a backward giant with a free-hip circle into a handstand with a forward giant. Ouch! I think to myself as I am falling to the mat. I look at the palm of my right hand and see a quarter-sized chunk of skin missing. Taking the athletic tape I wrap my hand, put some chalk on it, and continue my training. I’ll take care of the rip when I get home. Now we are almost halfway done with practice but there is still two hours and four more events left.

While eating dinner, I work on my homework. Finally around 11pm, I go to bed.

After another long day of school, I have a short break to grab a bite to eat and watch last night’s episode of the “Big Bang Theory” before I start working on my algebra homework. By now it’s almost four o’clock, I have barely started my homework, and it’s already time to leave for another night of gymnastics practice. I guess I’ll have to finish it after practice, again.

I have been involved in gymnastics since I was two years old. There have been many long days and nights with gymnastics practices and homework. I would have liked to have stayed in gymnastics, however my high school academics and sports became a new

I didn’t like it, but then again I started not to care either.…

After maybe five reps I begin to feel all the blood rushing into my biceps and my upper back, feeling it widen in my shirt, feeling my muscles tighten and contract, this feeling, it is what I have been waiting for the whole day, I cannot live without it. I pull the bar down one last time it stops about five inches from my chest, I feel like I cannot do anymore, but I pull with all my strength. As my face turns a bright ripe red, I let out a grunt like no other and pull it all the way down to my chest holding it for about ten seconds then letting go slowly as I feel my muscle fibers begin to rip, making way for new ones to grow and fill them up, making them thicker, stronger, better. I stand up slowly and feel all the blood rush to my brain fast, it is like a high, a healthy high that you can never get enough of, that you crave from the moment you wake up to the moment you are laying in your bed thinking about the steel, the weight that you will lift, that…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…
