Personal Narrative: Madison Square Garden

As the subway doors open, I am embraced with the aroma of sweat and grime. I walk out of the train car onto the dirt caked floor of Penn Station. My train whooshes by behind me like a comet. Above me comes a computer-generated voice letting me know where I am. The station is a sea of people. The loud hum of a thousand conversations buzzes in the air. As I walk, I see news stands, fast food places, and small marts. Raggedy homeless people are scattered across the station, while there are also businessmen in suits with a bluetooth in their ear walking throughout. The stuffy air brings a humidity to the area. The nasty atmosphere actually brings an odd joy upon me, for I know that Madison Square Garden is a short walk and an escalator ride away. …show more content…
Again, the fast food smell, from all the concession stands, wafts through the air. Dozens of Rangers and Knicks flags dangle from the ceiling. Screens around the concourse show the upcoming events. Glass cases filled with pieces of MSG history are scattered about. I take interest in reading the descriptions of the items. Madison Square Garden has been around for 47 years, yet it doesn’t show much age. Nothing seems to be broken or worn down. The metal at the concession stands glisten and are without even a hint of rust. I observe how all the people here are from different walks of life. Although everyone here may be different, they all share the same purpose for being here: to have a wild …show more content…
There is a royal blue banner that recognizes Billy Joel banner as the person who has performed the most at the garden as well the longest run of a single artist. Retired numbers from the Rangers and Knicks hang up in the arena. Mark Messier and Willis Reed played their games here. I grin when I look at the Rangers 1993-94 white, red, and blue, Stanley Cup championship banners along with the Knicks white, orange and blue 1969-70 and 1972-73 banners. All the home games during those seasons took place right here. Sure I have been here to see some special moments, but I strive to be in attendance for something legendary. What will happen tonight? Could it be something legendary? Only at Madison Square Garden are things so

My childhood in New York City was very difficult for me. I grow up in a predominantly Hispanic Dominican decent neighborhood in the upper Manhattan area called Washington Heights. Washington Heights in the early 1990’s was the heart of the drug trade. At one point in the 1990’s it was considered one of the worst neighborhoods to raise a child. I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

Shimmering lights lit up the crowded streets of New York City like the stars of the night sky; they made up for the fact that you couldn’t see the real ones. My feet felt like concrete blocks attached to my legs as I walked, I guess you could call it, through numerous groups of locals and tourists, all I’m sure who could tell easily that I had quite an edge. They didn’t know why, and frankly neither did I. All I knew was that I wanted to be by her side. I had first encountered Mabel one random night when I stumbled upon the 42 Club after leaving work, grimy and dirty from fixing up snobby, rich guys' cars all day and hating my life.…

There is a great deal of intrigue within a transitional period, in both a literal and figurative sense. The public transportation system acts a null void or translation from one location to the other, although seemingly mundane, it is crucial for providing context for one’s final destination. The subway in particular allows for social situations to arise where an individual can be introspective whilst observing a variety of different people and behaviors in a diminutive amount of time. The act of examination is this public sphere allows an individual to decide how they desire to interact within the environment. Additionally, the brain is capable of processing a vast amount of data at an exponentially rapid rate as to which a human can identify…

After that my brother, sister, and I were guided to the couches that were located in the lobby, while my parents spent about twenty agonising minutes checking us in. After the long flight I just wanted to lay down and rest, but my dad thought it would be a wonderful idea to go out into the city and explore some of the many different places. Groaning and dragging my feet along with shoulders hunched forward I followed my eager parents into a place that I had never been before. The hustle and bustle of the day was all around me, and the amount of people who were walking throughout the streets and the sidewalk was astounding. About five minutes into the walk a loud noise boomed throughout the entire city chanting words in a language I had never heard before.…
