As my mom prepared for her trip to the States to undergo chemotherapy treatments, I reluctantly relinquished my most prized possessions. Assuming that the cure was just around the corner and to shelter me from the battle, it was decided that I would move to the Republic of Georgia to live with my aunt.

While the year’s I spent in Georgia during my mom’s illness and after her passing were filled with hardships, my subsequent life in the United States and, ultimately, all of the opportunities that I have been given by the many individuals involved in my upbringing, solidifies in me a strong belief that adversity is surmountable. In my experience, bad things happen to everyone; the real difference lies in the resources

Since its independence – gained after the collapse of communism – Georgian people have endured periods of civil war, extreme poverty, corruption and crime. My school and, at times, my home had no heat or electricity, severely underpaid teachers used force to disciple students, and the void left behind by the absence of authority was filled with criminal-economic organizations. But, none of this stopped my aunt from providing me with the best possible education and ensuring I have a happy adolescence. During my time with her, I learned the Georgian language, excelled in school, took up extracurricular activities and formed lasting friendships, I also began to understand the critical importance of having advocates in overcoming adversity. A lesson I rediscovered when after my aunt passed away, I joined my father in the United States. Once again, I had people in my corner helping me overcome tragedy and providing me access to leading schools, inspirational mentors and glimpses into other world

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…

Sandra Cisneros’s short story, “Barbie-Q”, describes the hardships endured by a young girl, never identified by name, and the less-fortunate life she and her family lead. The child discloses the rarity of new toys, but purchases damaged Barbie dolls while on a trip to the flea market. The narrator acknowledges the flaws of the Barbies, but counters the stereotypical “perfect” woman standards by implying her gratefulness of possessing any dolls at all. Through this struggle, the girl learns to cope with her burdened lifestyle while also encountering gender roles and values. Cisneros wrote this story in relation to her own childhood, motivated by the social standards of gender roles and body image in relation to the Barbie doll.…

Growing up, my family and I weren’t very religious by any means. My parents grew up in Catholic families, but when they moved away from their families, they moved away from God too. Every time we were stationed in a new place, my parents always blamed not going to church on the military and how we would always be moving. My sister and I didn’t mind this, because we didn’t really know what church was, and didn’t understand the meaning of it, but when we moved to Louisiana in 2012, I met a friend that would change this. I met this girl Samantha, who seemed to be in a few of my classes.…

Just a city girl born in South Detroit and raised in West Bloomfield. Growing up in Michigan is a unique experience that a lucky few get to call theirs. It is something the rest of the states get a preview of through a flash of images and clips in “Pure Michigan” commercials. My childhood was a fortunate one filled with road trips for sunsets “Up North” and Mackinac Island fudge. Nowhere could compare to being raised in this odd mitten-shaped state.…

Moving here from North Carolina when I was four changed my life completely, I was away from my family who I lived with my whole life, thrown into a school with a bunch of kids who lived here since they were born and told to “make friends.” This changed the next 13 years of my life to something I can never picture not having. I’ve lived my entire life in Indiana, as have my parents. My mom and dad were raised close to Monroe and went to Adams Central, where they met and fell in love. They ended up moving north to Fort Wayne where they had my sister and I. We began our schooling in FWCS, but we moved farther north to the tiny town of Huntertown later, which led to my sister and I switching to NACS for my high schooling and her middle and high schooling. Due to all of the events that have happened here in Indiana throughout my life, and due to most of my immediate family living in the area, I have a desire to continue living and working here.…
