Personal Narrative: Life After Work

Improved Essays
Over the summer I was going through a great deal of obstacles. As the end was nearing, I decided I really needed to figure some things out. Therefore I decided to take a drive one day after work. Both of my parents were working so I was free to go wherever for the time. As soon as I got in the car after work I could feel the humidity and smell the stale air. I started the car and plugged my phone in so I could listen to music. I started playing something by Silverstein or Attila because they're usually what I listen to whenever I'm down about something. I was taking my time leaving work just so I could contemplate on the things I had been feeing while sitting still. I was motionless. It was one of those instances where you just blankly stare off in the distance and feel as if time as stopped. …show more content…
By this time, Rageaholics by Attila was playing and I felt okay for a minute. I pulled out of my work's parking lot and turned right onto Palmyra road. Next I started on highway 61. I rolled the windows down and had my music up all the way just drowning out the world. I passed Long John Silvers and you could smell the grease in the air. At the time, it wasn't a pleasant odor. As I was driving through Hannibal, I didn't make any of the green lights. My luck was horrible that day; everything was going wrong. From waking up late, having to rush to get ready, barely making it to work, and having rude customers on the phone. It was all just adding up, plus the other things I had going on. Finally I was out of Hannibal's city limits and I was on my way home. I drove about nine miles until I was near the bridge construction. This has been going on since around since the beginning of June. I then passed New London and was a few miles from Frankford when I decided I was going to take the highway 54 exit after passing

Aaron Copland’s “Down A Country Lane” was a very moving piece to me. I just felt at peace with this song. It reminded me of how America was all about being with loved ones and friends. I found myself reflecting a lot during this piece. The dynamics were flowing in and out of piano and forte throughout the whole piece.…

Haleigh Springborn Mrs. Tipps English Composition Compare Contrast Essay March 5, 2015 “I Cross My Heart” It is 8:00 P.M. and it is pouring rain, emotionally froze and tired, sleep is the farthest worry from the mind. Ever just have one of those days where nothing goes as planned? I call those days “Murphy’s Law” days, so named because Murphy’s Law is the old adage “if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong.” I usually welcome them with a glass of Scotch and some mood lifting music. And when I say mood lifting, I mean those tracks that allow you to hammer the steering wheel while driving or encourage you to scream lyrics into the void.…

The road trip, it has been by immortalized many an author, from Kerouac's stream of consciousness, to Steinbeck's descriptive narrative, to the frenetic, drug-fueled musings of Hunter S. Thompson. It's an American tradition. Tires humming beneath me, chewing up endless miles as they roll west. The loneliness of the small hours of the morning, the only company my four-legged companions snoring contentedly in the back, and the music - Tom Petty, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, all whose lyrics I belt out at the top of my lungs, windows down to let the cool air wash over me and keep me alert.…

“Elizabeth repeat after me, ‘you can’t always get what you want’” my dad joked. My dad always turned up this song on the radio whenever it was on in the car, and joked that it was “my song”. At the time of being only four years old, I didn’t realize how much of an impact this song by The Rolling Stones would have on me. Growing up, my favorite pastime has always seemed to be listening to music in the car; for me, the lyrics of every song scream out to me when I’m taking in the scenery outside the car window. It’s almost like time gets frozen and all I’m thinking about is the meaning behind every song and how it could relate to my life.…

Okay so basically i'm supposed to tell you about a time in which i was judged by a single story and of course I have many stories to tell. There’s the classic getting watched in a store, or the whole “I saw my uncle get pulled over by a cop for no reason” stories but really what else can I talk about? I’m black, and racism is a very real thing and I experience it on a daily basis, but I will never forget the time that my family and I were driving to North Carolina. We stopped at a gas station along the way and of course as all road trips go we had to get gas, use the washroom and get snacks.…

Thumb on the Scales of Work-Life Balance Several decades ago, when I was half my age and my Dad was still alive, he made a statement—actually a prediction—about the work and the time we spend at work. While not academically educated, he was a perceptive and optimistic man and he believed he was seeing a positive change in progress. We were discussing my job, its good and bad points, when we got around to the work hours; in my case that meant the standard forty-hour, Monday through Friday model.…
