I cried out for the teacher but my mournful words were muffled by the towering wooden door. It was total silence and I was determined to see the sun. Just before they locked me in the closet, I saw a light bulb at the top of the closet and flicked it on. I looked around the tiny cramped closet, there was a lot of dust, it smelled like stinky shoes after a kid had a basketball game, and an old coat hanging on the back wall. Sure, the walk home was long, but lying on his own bed was so much better than waiting forever in the library. He walked out of the gym and the afternoon sun’s rays glared painfully bright, blinding him for a second. In the distance, a group of older boys was playing basketball, their voices raised in unison as one player made a quarter throw shot. Simon stopped, raising an arm to shield his eyes from the sun.…

The three of us, being willed on by the attentive, watching eyes of our peers, went into the house to find a spot to sleep for the night. It was around eight o’clock, and the last glimpses of brilliant orange and pink light were beginning to fade into a star filled canvas. We first chose to explore the large, three story home, and then later choose a place to rest. I, against my will, was leading the pack because I had the flashlight. We walked towards the back of the house with the boards screeching and bending under our feet.…

It was a gray day. The sun did not shine; it could not sever the layers of powdery black skies and the fog. The thick mist that was not really rain and not really fog covered the southeastern corner of New Jersey. It was depressing, just like most days in the area surrounding the Overbrook Asylum. On the outside, Overbrook was a welcoming place where patients were treated with care and respect; the inside was very different.…

Usually after this was done, we would quietly walk in a single file line down the hallway to the playground. That day, however, it was different. When I opened my eyes, instead of an orderly line of kindergartners, there was one little boy chaotically jumping up and down. As red in the face as a tomato, he seemed to be getting antsier by the second. “Teacher!…

I've come to realize that being a lesbian is a big part of who I am. It's not all that I am, but it's a single word that succinctly describes an otherwise mysterious part of myself, and it comes with an entire culture. It might seem like an arbitrary trait to focus so heavily on, but I think many people don't realize what a big role their orientation plays in their lives. Humans naturally want to understand themselves, but that was hard for me in a society that allows little flexibility in regards to gender and sexuality. Growing up with that pressure added to the feeling that my true self was buried under piles of assumptions and expectations, and it took a lot of digging to unearth it.…

It was a snowy Wednesday night in the middle of December when I was wandering downtown after a short guitar lesson. To avoid the cold wind, I stumbled into an old, small bookstore where most of the books they sold were used. Being an eighth grader who did not like to read, I leaned against the wall by the door waiting for my mom to pick me up. The owner of the bookstore addressed me asking if I needed any help looking for a book. I politely declined and told him I wasn’t much of a reader.…
