The Arrival I had originally planned to travel to Rio on September 5th through September 12th. A perspicacious and experienced hunter named Rainsford accompanied me. It was nighttime when I first spotted land of any sort. It was vaguely visible and was opaque, so misty that even Rainsford couldn’t see it. Utterly tired, I began drifting off, dreaming of the adventures we were soon to face.…

This is where I got my food safe certificate. At the Delta Secondary School cafeteria I would prepare food that would be served for lunch that day. Every two weeks the student workers would rotate to a new station. The stations where pasta salads, soups, sandwiches, recycling, and dishwashing. I learned how to prepare all types of cafeteria food, dice an union, chop a whole chicken, how to properly use knives, and how to work in a fast paced environment serving lunch to students.…

We often hear the phrases, “food is fuel” and “you are what you eat” whether it is coming from a doctor or peers and family. Although it may seem unbelievable, it is true, how we balance the amount and what type of foods we eat in our daily lives can benefit or adversely affect our bodies. So what makes people choose to eat in a certain manner and put specific foods in their bodies? Well, through examining my own relationship with food I have discovered that dietary restrictions, parents’ cultural and personal preferences associated with specific foods can cause a person to lean favorably towards or turn them off from consuming foods, thereby molding an eating pattern. With my One Direction CD clutched in my hands, I started to close the distance by walking towards his car. I opened the door and slipped in, and then he started to drive to the grocery store. At the time I was under the illusion that my dad would be even slightly happy to see me, but no.…

From a young age, my parents have always enforced the idea of eating healthy constantly badgering me to eat my vegetables or have a piece of protein with my meals. Although I might not have understood why their reprimanding was important, over the course of these last few weeks in biology I have come to realize that having a sound diet in many ways encompasses what it means to be healthy and live life to its fullest. By actively moderating, recording, and learning about what I have been eating I can now clearly understand that my parents were right to encourage healthy eating in my home. My parent, specifically my mother, was always the one who cooked and influenced my healthy eating at a young age. When looking at my food logs for this…

Eating Healthy Last week when I went to the grocery store, I found that the price of food was a little bit on the expensive side. As I walked through the aisles of the store I heard a voice behind me saying that trying to eat healthy is like a luxury, you know like getting your hair done. You do not need it, but you want it. We both chuckled and parted ways. Then, I started thinking that if I really wanted to eat healthy then it is worth paying the price.…

When I was in high school, my mom was diagnosed with stage-III breast cancer. I still remember the doctor explaining to my family that her being overweight was a potential contributing factor. At that moment, I realized the importance of a healthy diet; seeing my mother struggle to survive each day further inspired me to pursue a nutritional science major. Even then, I imagined that I would one day become a dietitian, which would give me the chance to help sick people like my mom prolong their lives. My ambition was to facilitate healthy eating lifestyles in order to reduce chronic disease.…
