Personal Narrative: Joining Jack And Jill

To be honest at first I thought that the 60 hours we had to turn in by senior year was just going to be a hassle and it was unnecessary. But the help of my mom I figured out that helping the community is easier than I thought. My idea for my Christian service hours was to join Jack and Jill of America. It is a leadership and community service group for African-American children within the Twin Cities. I joined Jack and Jill my freshman year and it is brought so many new experiences and so many great people into my life I would not have done anything different. I would not say that I had an exact inspiration to join Jack and Jill but I would say I really wanted to see what it was like to be around more people of color. For my entire high school career I have wanted to go to a historically black college so, Jack and Jill was my gateway into seeing if I would really like that type of atmosphere.

Jack and Jill really helped me face certain conditions that I never experienced before. It made me really dig deep to become a better student, better at time management, and it really gave me a certain awareness of how my attitude and my tone affects certain situations within my life. For

Sometimes I take what I have for granted, I am truly blessed to go to the DeLaSalle, some people can't even think of having the opportunity to go to the school was such a great academics and atmosphere. With regards to my faith I really learned to just be solid in what I know, sometimes my faith wavers and I just trying to understand it all. But through community service I learned that I just need to trust in that everything happens for a reason and that God has a plan for me. As long as I continue to see my faith in that way I will have the opportunity to help others stay strong in their faith and understand that they do not have the same plan as me but God has a plan specifically made for

Every girl growing up has someone she loves at first sight; someone that instantly becomes a huge part of her life. When I say love at first sight, it’s not always about a lover. It can be someone you are just absolutely infatuated with, or a role model. I was fortunate enough to find a role model who truly makes me feel like an important piece to the puzzle of life. That role model is Jill Cochran, PhD, APRN-FNP.…

An experience that changed my life forever was coming to Northwest Christian for high school. Before I attended Northwest I spent all of elementary school and middle school at Rancho Solano. Although my time there was great, it was taught in a strictly academic worldview. Then during my eighth grade year, I made the decision to enroll in Boulder Creek High School. I began to get nervous because of the change in size, but then I started to embrace the idea of change.…

I don’t know why my parents named me Jack Clover. Actually, I don’t even know why they decided to give me a name if they were just going to give me the life I have. Ever since I was younger, my parents were never home. Mom was always out, cheating with other men because my dad was an abusive alcoholic. She practically left home when I was only seven.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Let's get one thing straight. We are not the Breakfast Club. We did not meet by chance, and we did not leave whether or not we would always be friends a mystery to those who were watching us. As far as I know, we will always be friends, and if we are not, I’ll always try to remember what made us, us.…

Being a silly freshman in high school who hadn’t a clue what to do, I would typically just go home and have hours of free time. Then one day I came across an announcement at school that said “Come to the Key Club meeting every Wednesday, there’ll be free candy”. Of course I was interested the moment I saw free candy; who doesn't want free candy? Besides, I wanted to be a part of a club at this opportunity-filled place called high school. I joined then, and stayed for all four years.…

Faith in Action Paper I spent my 15 faith service hours volunteering for Feed My Starving Children and I helped the maintenance crew around the school. While I did this I made new friends and grew as a person as well as in my faith. I probably spent about 8 or more of my service hours volunteering for Feed My Starving Children. Before when I was younger, I would go in because my older sister needed service hours and scoop some veggies and powder into a funnel for an hour and a half. Then after the session my sister would have me walk up to the counter and ask for a slip of paper with the service hours on it, so she give them to her school’s counselor and get the hours out of the way faster.…

In eighth grade I first began to get involved with the student ministry at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, a decision that has changed my life. In the summer before freshman year the church passed out forms to sign-up for small groups. At first, nobody was going to sign up because we all thought it was something that nobody would take seriously and it would be pointless. However, as the weeks went on we began to see the sign-up sheet fill up with names. So, we changed our minds and added our names to the sheet.…

awesome because then I can really have a more personal relationship with a group of students that I can talk to about God and help them through problems that they’re dealing with. The spiritual needs I believe are and were being met throughout the internship with each and every moment, when dealing with the message, life groups, and other spiritual building areas within the youth ministry. I really enjoy the way that the youth ministry that I was interning for ran each and every service. I don’t have many critiques or suggestions to improve the services but maybe one. The youth ministry is so big, maybe finding a way to split up middle school students and high school students more often.…
