Personal Narrative: Jesus Loves The Little Children In Spanish

Improved Essays
Trying to sing ‘Jesus loves the little children’ in Spanish, which turned out terribly, and losing almost every round of ‘pato pato ganso’, which translates to ‘duck duck goose’, is all part of an experience that is important to me. These moments, which were part of a trip, are most memorable because they helped break down the barriers that come cultural shock. The lives of people in the outskirts of Santo Domingo are much different from my sheltered life in small Kansas City, so I had to accept it and learn from such a shocking experience.
On the trip, it was very appalling to see the conditions the people were living in. It affected me heavily, seeing large families who lived from a handful of rice, children who begged us for some of our

I wanted to make a small gesture that showed I respected the people's culture. A few other girls and I sang the song in front of a crowd in church. We forgot some of the lyrics, mispronounced the words, and embarrassed ourselves during the performance. Small schoolgirls in the front pew giggled at our attempt, but in the end the church erupted in applause. Looking back now, I understand why all the little girls laughed. I sound tone-death when I sing and I probably chopped up and Americanized every vowel in that nursery rhyme.
But all in all, I grew with the experience. I met new people and became friends with people I thought I would never talk to. It showed me how much fun you can have if you keep an open mind and have new adventures without high expectations. I met so many families and enjoyed my time playing with the little children. I had never known I could have so much fun and share things in common with people from a different part of the world, who spoke a different language, and came from a different culture than I was from.
This experience will help me in the future as I move away from home and deal with different personalities and people from all walks of life. I will remember what I learned as I go through the highs and lows especially in college where I will be away from the comfort of my mother and as I make new

I Believe As I took the small child’s hand in my own and looked into her fearful eyes, a connection was formed between us which required neither words nor condition. As her mother sat down, the girl ran to her, hiding in her lap as the doctor began to talk. I gleaned bits from their rapid Spanish: “Mi niña no quiere comer,” which translates to “My child does not want to eat.” I looked back to the frail, frightened child, her face still concealed in her mother’s lap.…

I have always been fascinated by the complexities of the human mind. During my time as a Sunday School teacher’s assistant, I was always drawn to the eager children who soaked up information like a sponge. Attending class every Sunday gave me a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of companionship. The class I helped teach was in Spanish. Because of that fact, Spanish was the dominate language spoken, although the children—ages three to six—were constantly switching between English and Spanish in a very fluid manner.…

Since I could last remember, my grandmother has been the central figure in my family, sagacious and unfaltering in compassion. The stories of her life in rural Mexico with a family lineage extending back to Latin America always provided my daydreams with a substantial amount of material to play with. While my family did not have the financial means to travel to these countries with their colorful histories of kings, queens, and warriors, I knew I would have to visit the land my ancestors once walked. From this study abroad experience, I expect to not only adequately improve my Spanish, but to also connect with a culture that blessed me with so many enduring memories as a child. Machu Picchu, museums, culinary workshops, and dance lessons are only a minor aspect of the plethora of places and traditions I hope to explore and…

Refugees Flee With Nothing Ha, like many refugees around the world, are fleeing home and encounter challenges that make them feel inside out, like the lack of resources to flee their country. While Ha is fleeing Saigon by boat, she says, “The ration is now half a clump of rice only at morning and night and one cup of water all day.” (Lai, 88) Unfortunately, Ha and her family are getting even worse rations of old, moldy, expired rice. But it is the only thing to eat, so the refugees are forced to eat it. Some refugees that were living in refugee camps claimed, “Food and water are provided, but they are rationed.…

I have always been interested in other cultures, despite growing up in a small midwestern town. As a young child, I was fascinated with flags and maps of countries and dreamed of traveling to other parts of the world. Although my parents were not wealthy we had done a fair bit of traveling within the United States. My first recollection of people outside the United States were refugees sponsored by the church my parents belonged to. The refugees were from the country of Laos escaping the conflicts in Southeast Asia in the 1970s.…

Dear Members of the Reinstatement Committee: I am applying to be reinstated for the spring semester of 2017. This past semester has been tremendously harder for me that I originally thought. The statement, you don’t realize how much something means to you until its gone could not have proved more true to me in the past couple of months. I have loved my time at Washburn but last spring I let myself get lazy and I take full responsibility for that. I did participate in the STAR program like I should have.…

What if I told you, you had the opportunity to go back in time? You could return two, three, five years, maybe even a week back.
