Personal Narrative-It's Time To Take Off To College

As I finished my daily routine of Facebook posts the other day, I put together a collage of my son who is going off to College in the fall. When we adopted him 11 years ago we had no idea he what he would accomplish and where he would end up when it came to his college choice.

We had always hoped just for his happiness and stability.

Thus, as I wrote about his acceptance to Norwich University as a cadet and posted some pictures, all of a sudden I received a reply from the person I know from across the world, as his birth mother.

Not much has ever been said between us over the last few years. I always knew she was out there watching our posts as I do hers; she will send a heart or some other emoji once in a while, but this time she wrote, “Thank you.”

"Thank you."

I also wondered how she felt knowing her kids were not with her anymore. Many times I wanted them to write her a letter telling her their accomplishments but they were young and we were all unsure how it would go.

"Thank you."

My heart skipped a beat amazed at how those two words had such an impact. As I stared at those words a million feelings swirled through my body. Emotions that ranged from: “You don’t know what it has taken” to a simple “You’re Welcome.”

Lately I knew the boys had been on facetime with her and my husband and I were always okay with that. My boys knew her long ago and we could never take that away from them.

They said, she cries.

As I pondered what to say, the pain I now know she feels, had me scramble around with Google translate to find the perfect words to say to a women who I do not know but am forever attached. In the end ‘nie ma za co’ (You’re welcome) was sent to the other side of the world and I wonder if she accepted

Although growing up in a household surrounded by Vietnamese tongue, my parents always made the conscious effort to ensure that I was becoming more fluent in English—as I read the Little Golden Books Series every night before I slept, watched the Berenstain Bears on the small, bulky cathode ray television before me, and completed numerous School Zone workbooks—so that I wouldn’t be a step behind my English-speaking peers once I was sent off to pre-kindergarten. I never thought much of it, but the idea of one day—in the distant future—walking through confetti with a cap and gown on and a diploma in my hand had always been ingrained since I was four. I knew that I was going to graduate high school and go to college before I could even use the…

My decision to return to college was purely random. There was no pondering over the decision; no weighing in the pros and cons, no thinking it through or any real thought behind it. I literally woke up one morning and said to myself “I think I’ll go back to college” and I made the call. I called the College of New Rochelle and made the appointment for the admissions test. And before I knew what was actually happening, I was a matriculated college student.…
