One sunny morning during winter 2015, my best friend Abdul and I were walking to our high school gym class at the Academy for Social Action. When we entered the gym, there were no students or teachers except a Spanish coordinator, Ms. Dominguez. She assisted Hispanics students who could not speak English; she also was a Latin dance teacher. She asked me many times to join her dance club, but I refused to do so because I am a Muslim and as a Muslim, we are not supposed to dance. Abdul and I both greeted her saying, “Hola, Buenos Diaz Senorita” and she replied to us, “Hola, Buenos Diaz, Senor”. As we Walked by, she got up from the side bench and stopped me. She waited till

I stated, “Catholics are around the globe, as well as Muslims. Islam is the second largest religion in the world. In Islam there are combination of good and bad people like Catholics; in every single religion there are mixtures of perfect and imperfect people”. After I stated my thoughts, she was shocked to hear Islam as a religion, and she replied with a frail voice “Oh, Islam is a religion similar to Christian.” I walked away feeling desperate and exhausted. I told Markel the whole story and he started telling it to people; the news spread very quickly throughout the school. My highschool is very diverse and the administration is very serious about the racial/religious discrimination issues. For the students safety, my Assistant Principal begged me to write a complain letter, so someone else will not face the same tragedies in future. Even though I wrote the letter, I begged to my Assistant Principal to not to fire her because we are human and we all make mistakes, so she can learn from this experience and would be more careful in future. However, if I agreed with the Assistant Principal for firing her, then she would not learn something and she would have made the same mistake over and over again. To conclude, even

My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. Being part of such a small community while heightening my sense of being has also made me more appreciative and understanding of other cultures & groups. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. My community has also enabled me to be a better communicator- as often times questions are asked regarding my ethnicity and religion where I can act as a spokesperson for the…

I sit down as my fellow teammates form a tunnel for the starters to run through. Coach C. begins to list off the Creede starters. After he names the last Creede starter he announces, “Now put your hand together for your home Pirates!”…

So it started out as a normal school day and as we were coming back from lunch we all went to the restroom and only six of us got taken. As we were using the restroom Andrew Myers, Jahzara Mckinney, Kadance Gravely, Maddox Lyons, Hayden Elliott, Kaylie Hawks and myself were pulled into the sewers and through a pipe that somehow took us to a island. We were stranded there by ourselves the island was like a forest in a way it has tall redwood trees high grass like the jungle and a beautiful glossering pond. So as we were there we were all panicking then I just got really quiet. We went to bed and the next morning Hayden and Jahzara were fighting over food we had from killing Andrew we had a lot of food left over from yesterday but both Jahzara and Hayden wanted that same piece.…

As a student growing up, have you ever had that one classmate that was obnoxiously annoying and loud during a lesson? Someone who sucked his teeth or rolled his eyes each time a teacher put up a homework assignment on the board. Someone who walked in late to class, bobbing his head, singing or rapping the lyrics to a song with headphones in his ear. Someone who would continuously make fun of other students and need constant redirection every 5 minutes. I have.…

The Devon School was once full of life and everyone was happy that is, until I came. The boys really thought they knew who I was but they were completely wrong. This all began at the Devon school I met Gene, Finny, Leper, Brinker, and the other students. At first when I met Gene I was suspicious of him because I felt he was not trustworthy and was conservative. However, I noticed that Finny trusted everyone, including Gene, which he was humble and did not brag about how athletic or cool he was.…

Journal Ed Welch talked about how our histories can impact us, particularly in dealing with conflict. God used this to help me see how I approach conflict as a gardener would his garden. I have a family member who approaches it more like a sword-yielding gladiator, and this has led to struggles. Realizing these differences has vastly improved our relationship. A dear friend of mine recently experienced a conflict with another individual.…

One bright and sunny day when I was ten, my cousin Tasnim, older brother Rafeed, dad and I were on the New York subway on our way to Ellis Island, which is where the Statue of Liberty stands. The subway was old and rusty and smelled like dead rats. I was really excited to go because I had never been to the Statue of Liberty although the ride on the subway wasn’t really “the ride of my life” so to pass the awful time my dad gave us some gum to chew on. Since my brother and I didn’t know how to blow a bubble my cousin decided to teach us, and I succeeded on my first try, but my brother, well he didn’t do so well. On his last try he blew so hard like the big bad wolf, his gum landed right on my cousin’s face and boy was she furious, I could see it in her eyes, the anger and regret forever trying to teach my brother how to blow a bubble gum.…

The Awakening Challenging, demanding, dynamic, and unpredictable were all words that describe Dr. Powell, my Sophomore English teacher. Her rigorous teaching style left me with unrelenting anxiety. I feared that I would not meet my own high expectations in her class. Eventually, the fear that consumed me dispelled; I became used to her unpredictable style and started to feed off of and crave the challenge her class provided. She unearthed a side of me I never knew I possessed.…
