Personal Narrative: In Christ Alone

“One of the secrets of life is making stepping stones out of stumbling blocks.” –Jack Penn As my thoughts raced and mocked every ounce of confidence that I could have possibly possessed, I impatiently prepared for what was about to come. It was finally my time to be in the limelight—my time to share my God-given talents. I came from a shy and insecure mindset, but being chosen for the soloist position in a new style of worship would change everything for me. “You’re going to great,” said one of my closest friends from the praise team, Caroline. I could not believe her; I was too afraid to let down my praise team and congregation. I remember hearing everyone sing the opening hymns. I timidly walked up the steps and firmly grasped my microphone to assure that no one would see my trembling. As I awkwardly stood on stage waiting for the music to begin, I asked myself, “What will the Southern Baptist church think of me singing this gospel song?” The track began and my instinct was to close my eyes so that I would not see anyone when I sang the first line. I instantly felt as if a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. The satisfaction of letting everyone hear the real me while singing a song of revival, gave me a sense of peace. I was absolutely mind boggled by the reactions that I perceived from the stage! I saw my tough and not-so-sensitive dad sobbing, my non-believer friend attentive, and the rest of the congregation worshipping with me. I got my first standing ovation. I was so proud to take it in with my fellow praise team members. Come to find out, by practicing with my team in front of people, we influenced them to ask our praise team leader, “What is so different about these kids?” Fortunately, God’s love was revealed through our singing.
