Personal Narrative: I Am As A Writer

Improved Essays
Growing up, I always loved to write. From short stories about damsels in distress as a child to controversial articles for my high school newspaper, expressing myself through the written word constantly motivated me to become my best self. I enjoyed entertaining and informing others from the minute I learned how to form sentences, and though my content was not Pulitzer Prize worthy, it was enough to put a smile on the faces around me, including my own. The interesting part with this however, wasn’t that I loved to write, but why. You see, English is not my first language. My parents fled from their native country of Ukraine to the United States in 1995. They barely spoke English at home and exposed me to Russian culture and dialect until …show more content…
My speech, however, was questionable. My native soviet tongue found difficulty in pronouncing words that my peers had ease with. Reading and writing was the only thing I had left to fall back on to help me communicate and express myself fully. It connected me with the outside world and made me feel like I wasn’t different than everyone, despite my difficulties with speaking. With months of dedicated practice, my articulation eventually improved and I communicated effectively through the spoken word, however, my skill of communicating through paper continued to strengthen beyond its means. My school placed me into higher reading and writing classes, I read works of literature well beyond my peers’ reading level, and my stories only continued to advance. Today, I speak and write in English better than my parents; with virtually no proof of my battle with language as a child. Writing continues to serve as a part of me today, as it fully shaped me into the person I am today. Just as I once enjoyed to inform and entertain others with my writing, I hope to continue this as I pursue a career in journalism and use my voice for the greater good. Like a fish out of water, I can’t picture myself without a story, article, or blog post pouring out of my fingertips and onto the paper. My skill in communicating through the written word has already taken me so far, and I eagerly await our next adventure

I started writing then because of a troublesome past, both my mother and my father had left my two other siblings and I all alone, leaving us with our uncle. It was very hard for me to adjust, I was fatigued and emotionally hurt, I turned to writing. My love for writing grew into a bigger part of my life when I kept dream journals.…

Over the first semester I feel I have been appropriately challenged in the area of writing we have done this year. I learned many new skills, but the most important one involves English and how to write properly. As for the first writing, I really did not understand what was right and what was wrong. Because I never paid close attention to specific rules in how to write. I truly believe it has been hard for me.…

This week beginning March 12, 2018, we were given an assignment in the class instructing us to write a five-paragraph essay on our relationship with writing. Conveniently, my love for writing stems from the various types of exposure I have had with it. At this time, I am excited to share a short personal history including external and internal influences that has assisted in cultivating the relationship I have with writing today. As a child, I was fortunate to have a few different external entities that encouraged me to read and write. Respectively, my mother taught me the alphabet and encouraged me to become proficient in phonetics by the age of three and my father introduced me to a location that provided me with unlimited access to stories.…

Writing has always been something I have gotten enjoyment from; sentence structure and grammar being a particular interest of mine. In school, I was quick to catch mistakes in writings and was often praised for my ability to string stories together. Closely observing the techniques and styles of authors I admired, I’ve considered myself to be more of an effective emulator of writing than a true writer. Personally, writing has always been a vehicle for artistic expression, meaning I usually made a habit of avoiding most non-fictional assignments in school. It wasn’t until much later that I learned to use it as an educational and professional tool.…
