“I am a Spartan!”

Aroo! Aroo! Aroo!

The mantra of the race was supposed to motivate us for what was to come. A burst of energy soared through me as I sprang forward with a giant leap. Thunk! I had literally hit my first wall. It was taller than it appeared. I grasped tightly to the edge, flailing, and swinging. Alas, as my fingers began to slip, I tumbled miserably to the ground. Defeat was forthcoming. It wasn’t even the first obstacle of the race. A wall meant to build my stamina, increase my momentum, a test of my strength and will, instead

One mile left to go and by then I had lost count how many obstacles were left. The pain endured was more than I could have imagined. All feeling was lost, my mind raced as fast my heart, how much more could my body take before collapsing from exhaustion, overheating and thirst. It was an out of body experience, like a dream I couldn’t wake from. What kind of person signs up for this kind of torture? It was not because of failure that led me to stop believing in myself. It was giving up after not being able to live up to the pressures and expectations of me to succeed right out of high school. It was not caring about my education for a while because I thought a social life was more important than studying. I was there because I figured out the difference between failing and giving up. Giving up was what I had done when I believed I wasn’t cut out for the mission before realizing I was on the wrong path to begin with. Failing came from setting a goal and committing to seeing it through to the end only to find that it wasn’t where I was meant to be. It was working 2 jobs to make next month’s rent but getting fired from one because I didn’t stand up for myself and

The neighborhood was noiseless, and the sky was pitch black, for there had been no moon on that summer morning in June. My mother and father started our car and waited for Sofia,my sister, sean ,my friend, and me to get inside. It was time to leave our dull suburban home in San Jose, and drive to the beloved National Park, Yosemite, to hike Half Dome. On the car ride there I had slept, but awoke right when we had gotten into the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Looking outside of the window and noticing all of the evergreen trees was surreal for me, as I rolled down my window a strong smell of pine and fresh air poured into the car.…

The Journey being the means by which we discover ourselves, involves the exploration of the self, as individuals review their development and growth in the light of experiences which inspire and/or challenge them. This journey can be seen as the result of personal growth, a result of pain or acceptance of consequences. As you will soon see, from comparative texts such as the play called Cosi by Louis Nowra, and a picture book called Rose Blanche by Ian McEwan, the experience and extent of the inner pain may differ to ultimately end in a similar kind of journey or one completely different.…

As an eighth grader, I had no choice but to balance out my school work, making sure to do all the chores, and taking care of my three younger siblings at home by myself. My parents would be up in the hospital taking care of my now passed grandmother, who had cancer, while I, being the oldest child in the family, had to stay home alone to take care of my younger siblings. At first it was a difficult task for my 12-year old self to handle. While I was doing my homework or studying, I would have to stop what I was doing and help my siblings on their homework. There I was, anxiously waiting for the guy at the starting line to shoot the gun so we can begin our journey to the finish line. After what felt like a lifetime, the gun went off and everyone took off like a stampede of wildly angry animals. I began sprinting while remembering to count to five in my head, slowly declining to a fast jog, then to a slower jog with big strides. Some of the other girls and I played tag for a while, they passed me and I passed them, which was the start of the race to the end. The pack of runners turns a corner and my legs nearly collapsed when I saw what was ahead, a very slow yet steep inclined hill.…
