Personal Narrative: How My Faith Changed My Life

Improved Essays
Growing up as a child, I was raised into a spiritual faith. The type of faith that required morning mass every Sunday. I had not truly understood my religion throughout my childhood until my freshman year when I did a four day Teen ACTS retreat that completely changed my life. I gained such a close understanding of my faith that I wanted to do my best in following the morals that pertained to it. I had grown up my whole life with my cousin Johnny by my side. We were inseparable since we were only a few years apart and lived nine houses away from each other. I considered him a brother instead of a cousin. As I had collaborated with him before he left for college my sophomore year, he told me something much unexpected. Johnny was a homosexual. …show more content…
It only took four days to change me into a new person. Yet, when I found out about this unexpected news from Johnny, it was not that I was against it. It was my new morals that were not completely rooting for this. But who am I to discriminate people? I had grew up with Johnny not knowing about his secret so now that I did know, it should not have been a reason to change our brotherly relationship. As time passed by, Johnny was back in town for the holidays. We enjoyed each other's company when we both had a chance to see each other. His secret was forgotten whenever we would have our engaging conversations together. It was just like old times again. I continued with my faith and attended Sunday masses. During one conversation that I had with Johnny, religion happened to come up. We both talked about our views and the differences between them. It seemed rather fascinating hearing all of his views and perspectives. Even though, we collaborated about this it did not change my thoughts on my spiritual religion. In fact, it made me more open-minded on this topic. Also knowing about Johnny's secret made me realize that faith is not just based on following the rules. It is having the ability to be a good person and find peace with others positions in their faiths. I believe that through my conversations with Johnny, I was able to look at the big picture of life and understand that everyone is going to have different morals and

The day that I will always be able to remember the exact details, despite the shudder that would come from recalling it. I had had a pretty basic life up to now. My excitement was like a like five year old on a sugar rush from eating too much Halloween candy. I had not played Rock Band in seven depressing years. The game forged a very destructive and negative atmosphere, due to the deafening sounds of the musical instruments and songs. I screamed into the microphone aggressively, attempting to follow the violent lyrics shown on the large television. I was anxiously moving along to the beat of the song, jumping energetically from side to side.…

People are afraid to stand up for what they believe in because they are scared of what other people are gonna say and don’t want to be judged or even told what to do . Every person should not be afraid to speak up for they believe in because if you stand for it you should also defend it. This reminds me of the Puritans who faced kinda of the same thing I went through after people found out what religion I was. This subject reminds me of when I stood up for my religion because some friends knew what I stood for and they used to make fun of me and then one day it all changed.…

As a recently confirmed Catholic, I feel closer to God than ever. However, Confirmation wasn't what I thought it would be. I had known what was going to happen: we would be presented to the bishop, listen to the homily, renew our baptismal promises, the bishop would lay his hands upon us, and we would be anointed with Chrism. However, I couldn't have predicted the feeling of the Chrism on my forehead or the inexplicable joy that I felt afterwards. I couldn't have possibly known the understanding of my mission that I felt as I walked out of the Church and as I listened to the homily that day.…

How My Faith Defines Who I Am Faith: having a strong belief in a religion, or an even stronger belief in a God. I personally believe in God the Father, and that he created each and every one of us in his own image. I believe that Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sin and brought us new life through his death and resurrection. In my faith I stand as a Catholic, which means I believe in only one God. However, God is three persons, also known as the Holy Trinity, meaning there is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.…
