Personal Narrative: Henry Island In The San Juan Islands

Improved Essays
As I peered down the bluff, I saw the magnificent black-and-white beasts breach the water of the Salish Sea. The L-pod resident orcas were gliding past Henry Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. This sight reminded me why I was in the San Juans in the first place: to appreciate nature and do my part to protect it. I finally got to experience these natural beauties that I had heard oh-so-much about from the locals. The sea breeze flowed onto my face, and I appreciated the wonder of it all. Kayakers exclaimed in jubilation as they paddled after the orcas, awed as much as I was. My fellow conservation crew members, whom I’d only met a few short days before, stood idle, happy for a break in a long, hot day.

As the daughter of parents who love to travel, I’ve had the pleasure of travelling across Canada and America as well as a few other countries from a young age. I have visited the loud and bustling streets of Tokyo and the ethereal gardens in Kyoto, stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, walked the strip in Las Vegas, and watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean in Martha’s Vineyard. Although I should be able to look back on a childhood filled with events and memories from trips, I find it difficult to recall most vacations without a visual prompt. When I flip through old family photo albums, I don’t recall much more than what is shown in their pages. The outdated clothing, the people, and the locations are seen in the images, and therefore…

Orca families differ from one another with each family being very close. An orca’s sense of self is distributed among the individuals in their group; without their family, they lack that social aspect of their lives and the bonding they have towards each other, causing them to be violent towards one another in captivity. Lori Marino, a neuroscientist, talks about how orcas have a part of the brain that humans do not have--how these animals are so much more social than human beings. An orca’s life revolves around the bonds and socialness they have with their family. She explains, “Dolphins and whales have a sense of self, they have a sense of social bonding--it’s much stronger and more complex than humans…everything about them is social--everything”.…

The film shows the method of capturing wild orcas on the coast of Washington, which is a visibly horrific ordeal for the capturers as well as the orcas. Speedboats and aircrafts rallied towards the flocks of orcas, dropping water bombs to herd them together like sheep. The aircrafts kept tabs on their movements. A 3 acre net was thrown over them and the young were plucked from all they've ever known, while the painful cries of distress from their loved ones filled the ears of the humans capturing them. Some even died during the capturing process, dying for literally nothing.…

Killer whales have been kept in captivity since 1961 and at least 165 orcas have died in captivity, not including 30 miscarried or stillborn calves. Dozens of wild orcas are plucked from their families and forced to live in artificial social groupings. There are currently a total of 60 orcas held in captivity in many entertainment parks. “While the whales have been spotted with rake marks caused by tankmates' teeth, and a host of serious injuries caused by fighting, Fischbeck confirmed just how regular - and severe - the fighting could get” (Schelling). People began capturing whales for entertainment purposes in the late 1960’s.…
