Personal Narrative-Hate Relationship With My Dog

Decent Essays
I've never laughed at anything harder than the time my dog did a handstand. Just to provide some backstory, my dog, Jesse, has had this love–hate relationship with his water bowl since we adopted him seven years ago. His bowl is made of a shiny, reflective material that you can, well, see yourself in. When we first brought him home, he was completely terrified of it. Jesse refused to drink out of it for the first week we had him, and when he finally did go to drink from it, he did a handstand. This handstand was not just a third-grade P.E. class monkey kick into the air, this handstand was an olympic-qualifying gymnastics stunt. He was leaning in to drink, but he was also leaning away because of how frightened he was of his own reflection.

I needed Coalby in top shape for the dog show at the county fair in twenty minutes. To begin with, there was blistering heat at the fairgrounds that day. Everything was going horrendously; I was waiting to show Coalby, but then, without warning, he used his ferocious bark at the other dogs. That’s how I figured out the importance of grit. He didn’t listen to my commands either!…

After a three-hour bus ride, surrounded by strangers, I arrived at Camp Pendleton. With no expectations, I assumed Devil Pups would be just another leadership camp. As I stepped off the bus immediately trapped by three drill instructors screaming in my face, I knew I had made a grave mistake. From the moment I stepped foot on Camp Pendleton, I knew my life would never be the same. Devil Pups was initiated due to a group of teenagers who in the 1950's burned down the American flag.…

I am terrible at throwing things. If someone says "toss me that pen" it usually ends up three feet short or it goes soaring over their head. Yesterday marked the six-month anniversary of the day I was hired for my fifty-cent-more than minimum wage post at a big-box pet store. I started off as a cashier and made my way over into Pet Care in record time, especially for someone who had close to no experience with the animals I would be caring for. I knew a bit about the small mammals; hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rats, mice, and chinchillas, and I tried to make that a bigger selling point than it actually is. There isn't nearly as much to know about them as there is, say, eyelash crested geckos. Or running a fucking fish tank.…

One of the best possible ways to convince my parents to adopt a dog is to utilize the lessons Machiavelli unveils in many of his chapters. To assure the adoption of a new dog I must, as Machiavelli claims, aspire for tremendous goals as others have, prepare for the worst, and to be smart as well as tough. Part of my strategy to persuade my folks to accept a dog is to aim for higher goals. With the high goal being a dog, I should follow in the path “trodden by great men and imitate those who are most excellent,” meaning I should use influences such as others who were able to attain a dog and incorporate their ways into my situation (Machiavelli 48). According to Machiavelli, I should “aim at a spot much higher than the one they wish…

What my dog has taught me Humans are basically social animals, and in learning to coexist more peacefully, our pets could teach us a thing or two. Humans are sometimes arrogant enough to believe that our lives matter more than others, but in owning a dog it 's clear to see why it doesn 't. I know some people consider their pets as a part of their families. I strongly agree with that stance towards the dog I have in my home. Having been a dog owner since the age of nine, I can claim that a lot of growing and maturing goes on during that timeframe. Pets have this ability to teach people things that even humans cannot.…
