Narrative “Who celebrated Christmas over this winter break? If so, raise your hand.” A teacher of mine asked the class. I looked around, and my classmates raised their hands, eagerly waiting to share their experience. However, I noticed my hand was not raised. Suddenly, it made me realize that my upbringing, enriched by my Indian culture, did not include celebrating holidays such as Christmas. As an individual, growing up in America and pursuing my educational journey in a non-Indian-dominated population has helped me awaken my eyes to the richness of my own culture as an Indian, so I want to continue embracing my culture, building connections, and preserving traditions. Some similarities include the use of spices, common types of food, and more. Through building connections, I was allowed to learn new stuff and teach others about my heritage as well. This can satisfy people’s feelings of being heard and understood, bringing so much happiness, regardless of who they are. Building connections can help make a positive impact in the community, as well as appreciating and supporting one another. Lastly, with an understanding of my culture, I chose to participate and preserve traditions. Just like how Eva’s mother in Rebecca Cox’s article, “The Student Fear Factor,” encouraged her not to give up on college, my mother played a significant role in helping me appreciate my cultural heritage. Despite growing up in America, she made sure to teach me Indian mantras, language, and customs. Attending festivals like Diwali and Navratri has become an important part of my life, allowing me to gain even more insight into my culture. My mother’s influence could have led me to either appreciate American culture more or develop a deeper interest in my own. Fortunately, her guidance sparked a genuine passion within me for an interest of my
