Personal Narrative-Grand Canyon

Improved Essays
I’m standing at the edge of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. I look out across the vast cavern catching glimpses of the Colorado River twisting through red striped spires. The southern sun beats down on the back of my neck, but my arms have goosebumps on them. I try to turn my gaze to my family behind me, but I can’t tear my eyes away from the view. I’m frozen in awe at the world around me. I’m picking my way across one of the rocky beaches that makes up the coastline of Maine. The rounded rocks shift with every step I take turning the ground into a kaleidoscope of muted blues, greens, and reds. As the tide rocks in and out the waves crashing into the shore create a continuous symphony. I find myself looking down at my toes as the waves

I could hear the dark rumble of the waves crashing over the shore, and the shrieking screams of children playing in the water. My feet massaged themselves, and the toasty sand crept over my skin. It felt like a daydream. Umbrellas perched everywhere, sticking themselves into the beautiful, white sand. Seagulls hovered themselves over the the scene, occasionally taking a rest, and would peck at…

As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

We left Courthouse Rock one day later and we traveled fourteen miles to Chimney Rock. We didn't stop there. We just drove right by. This formation was named Chimney Rock because it looks like a chimney stack for a factory or a chimney from a burned down house. When we left to go to Fort Laramie a bolder fell on one of the wheels of our wagon.…

Every summer as tradition dictates I take my cousins on a hiking trip. Every year we try to hike a different mountain for the day and this year four of us went to hike Mt. Tecumseh in NH. This year was particularly an amazing experience as it was great to spend the day with them all together before I had to go to college. I also got to utilize my iPhone’s camera to its full potential to take amazing photographs (which is a new hobby of mine).…

Your peripheral vision is gone—there’s complete focus, then a silence so muted that all you know is the feeling of your heart beating. Then, as you stand there motionless, you feel the adrenaline. I mean really feel it—a syrup coursing through your veins, yet not a syrup as it moves faster than blood. You know when it hits your heart because it starts beating faster, faster, faster, and then the feeling is gone. Then everything is gone—emotions, breath, sensation……

Managing to ignore the voices in my head that tell me I’m not capable, the determination inside of me grows; I wanted to prove myself wrong. While droplets of sweat brim over the tip of my nose, aching muscles bicker in rebellion with each step. I came to a stop as my neck stretched back to examine the enormous mountain that towered over me. As the sun set behind it, an ominous silhouette stared back and cast a shadow over a trail leading into darkness. My friend’s eyes widened in wonder as I commanded, “Hike on!”…

Epic trees It was actually green The ocean Skull rock The major butt workout When we first moved to LA, all of the locals, whether by birth or adoption, would gush about this marvelous "Runyon Canyon" and how we NEEDED to hike there to finally feel like we had done the best hike in all of Los Angeles. After a few months of putting it off, Damon and I finally decided to christen our move by putting on the sneakers and trekking it up dusty, dry, desert like hills to see the "glory" that Runyon has to offer.…

Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…

Ever since my first backpacking trip 6 years ago, I’ve had an affinity for the Appalachian Trail. I’m constantly looking for excuses to mash our lives into the giant, 50 liter bags, and hit the trail for a few days. This past year, in early fall, I convinced my parents to don their sturdy boots and disappear into the wilds of bear state park with me for three days. We were dropped off at the top of Bear Mountain and, while my parents argued over directions, I wandered around the windswept ridge.…
