Personal Narrative-Filling Yards With Flamingos

Improved Essays
Over the past two months I have spent numerous nights filling yards with flamingos while the families inside slept unknowing of what was happening. I spent a night teeter tottering for six hours and made blankets the day after. When I worked at a grocery store I used to stop during my walk back, and return to buy groceries. These are all things I do nearly out of impulse because of how I was raised and who I am. Growing up I learned from a young age that if someone you know needs something, you give what you can. My great-grandmother always devoted her free time to helping at her church, the hospital, and in her community. My father always puts himself last when others have something they need. I used to wonder why he would remind me, “did …show more content…
Me and my friend spend the occasional night going out at 11PM to raise this money and sometimes did it multiple nights in a row. Being on a teeter totter for six hours sounds fun at first, though I learned it’s quite the task. I chose to do this because I had over 600 dollars in pledges for Eliminate riding on me riding the teeter totter and why waste time on games when I could devote it to others. When I used to work at Cub Foods I would occasionally see people on the streets nearby with signs saying things like: “lost my job need to feed my family” and “hungry without money.” Whenever I saw these people I asked if they would like to go back in with me and buy a meal on me. The one I remember most distinctly was a group of two men, a woman, and their dog. They were dressed in very old dirty clothes and just enough to cover up. They each had a backpack that carried everything that they own. When I asked about them they told me they hadn’t eaten for days. They had been riding the rails because their friend had died and they needed to get to the funeral in another state. Some consider it a problem that when someone asks me a favor, or seems in need, I can almost never turn them away. I see it as a core part of myself and a thing that brings me the most joy in

Paper #2 – Critical Evaluation of Dalton’s Citizenship Measures Generations of the American people faithfully participate in government policy because it is an honor and privilege to engage in the fundamentals of our country’s political democracy. In The Good Citizen, Russel J. Dalton explores good citizenship and how it affects the country. Also, Dalton focuses on the millennials, and challenges those that do not care about the country. Dalton further analyzes how the norms have changed over the past decades. Dalton’s ideas on American citizenship are interesting and somewhat engaging, which I find myself mostly agreeing with.…

I show leadership, service, or scholarship character every day at school and home with all my sisters. But there are many events, where I show service more. For example, I help Ms. Soto with the PTA meetings that the school has, I also take care of her son Aaron whenever she has an important meeting to attend. I'm willing to give up my personal time to take care of Aaron because I feel like if I see anyone needing to help I should to help them in any way I can. It's something inside of me that wakes up and tells me " go help ", " they need your help, go to see what you can do."…

I’ve never been able to decline help to someone in need. I always put everyone else's needs before my own because when I sacrifice myself in order to put a smile on someone else’s face it gives me peace. Contributing to a cause to make the world a better place is worth the sleepless nights. When one is passionate about helping people it won’t matter to them how long they have to go without food or how tired they will feel at the end of the day. Just this week, I’ve had several occasions where I gladly gave up my time to do people favors or help someone in need.…

I grew up in the small town of East Palo Alto, California and I am raised by a single mother who works hard to provide for my family of 5. I had to watch her raise my three siblings and I. There was this one moment that has made me appreciate what we have now. It wasn't always like that. Right around Christmas, it was always hard for my mother to provide us with the picture perfect tree and gifts under that tree.…

Someone once said, “Happiness is like chasing a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. You will never find it if you look for it.” John Stuart Mill’s autobiography, “A Crisis in My Mental History: One Stage Onward” (1909) argues that in order to be happy, one must secure their mind on something other than their own happiness. Under the realization that one's happiness is only attained by not making it the direct end, Mill approaches this subject by first giving examples of what makes one happy and then continues to tell the reader why the route they are approaching happiness is insufficient to give contentment.…

Several charities provide gifts to people who donate; for example, organizations hold drawings to reward those who give money. The practice of offering incentives for charitable acts appeals to various organizations because people are more likely to donate if the receive something in return than if they do not obtain compensation. While rewarding people for providing aid to the underprivileged is controversial, incentives are ethical because charities receive more donations than they would if they did not give back. Even though all able people should contribute to helping others, most do not. American society glamorizes an excessive amount of possessions and money, and as a result, people are unlikely to give items away; for example, a substantial…

Giving back is often thought of when "stars" give to communities in need once they get rich. When Flint,Michigan's water pipes were found to be infested with lead poisoning, early October 2014, celebrities like Madonna and Cher reached out donating $10,000 dollars and 200,000 bottles of water. An admirable contribution, giving back to a community in need and helping others who under the circumstances couldn’t help themselves. However you don’t have to be rich to give back, a great deal of people throughout my life have given me something that have helped me along the way. Whether it be a warm hug, some help with my homework or a laugh, it's the little priceless things that have impacted me the most.…

What are my ethical beliefs? In order to answer that question I had to do a good amount of self-reflection. I went on a run to clear my head and engage in an audit of my beliefs. I came up with three ethical beliefs: the belief that all people are entitled to marriage, the belief that mediocrity should not be accepted, and the belief that people have an obligation to help those that are less fortunate. I begin with my belief regarding marriage.…

Growing up in a family situation where money isn’t tight, I became blatant to the idea of how others constantly struggle. I have lived in a household where there is constantly an abundance of food, money for activities, and a welcoming house to come home to therefore leading me to get caught up in thinking everyone has the same gratifications. When I was little, I was unaware of how fortunate I am and how much my parents work to provide for me. As I’ve matured I have grasped the idea that I am in a stable financial situation and should give back to those who aren’t as lucky. Countless people talk about how giving back is important and while that is true, I have constructed a different way of accomplishing the heartwarming feeling.…

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” or “who made the biggest impact in your life?” are questions that I could answer from the top of my head. “What’s an experience in your life that helped shape the person you’ve become?” is one of those questions that requires little critical thought. Because volunteering at this homeless shelter changed my entire outlook on and attitude toward life, it didn’t take me that long to figure out that it was an experience that happened to shape the person I am today because I began to cherish life so much more, it taught me the responsibility that I’m pretty sure every parent craves in a kid. Also, I have a much more positive outlook on life.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…

The Concepts of Morals When’s the last time you helped a complete stranger and expected nothing in return? I try to do a good deed every day, and sometimes I completely forget. However, on those days I do help someone else, I always get a good feeling deep inside in which I’m instantly reminded of my grandparents who taught me a lot about morals, my parents who always see the good in people and my family and friends who are there for me no matter what. For most of my life I have always enjoyed helping other people, I think it comes from the way my family has always done whatever they can to help others and that was passed down onto me growing up and helping my family do community service events and things of that nature. To this day I find that I tend to put the needs of other people, especially the ones I care about, above the needs of myself.
