Lia has never made it past before. Briefly, options are considered in her mind. Something new and courageous must be done if any improvement is to be made. She decides to leap. Her toes dig into the small crevice of rock beneath her feet.

How does any of this matter if it will all be gone one day? She fails at the difficult section of the wall from yesterday, and now Lia is worried that more mistakes like this will cause her to lose interest in rock climbing. The soft music playing and the faint smell of lemon-scented cleaner, which usually calm her down, have no effect on her today. Lia leaves the gym with her fervor for the sport dimmed.
The sign on the gym the next day says that it is closed for repairs. “Sorry, Lia, I know how passionate you are about rock climbing. Hopefully they’ll open again soon,” her mom sympathizes. A heavy sigh echoed though the small dank space, followed by a low humorless laugh. Oliver carefully shifted his precarious footing in the soft muck beneath the dark murky water, grimacing as the mud oozed deeper into his boots. He raised his eyes toward the circle of dim light a mere five feet beyond his reach. An angry scar of exposed red clay marred a large portion of the wall above where he had attempted to climb out nearly a half hour earlier, the missing stones lost somewhere in the ice cold water below.…

I see people clapping their chalky hands in the air, and watch people doing back tucks on the trampolines.
