The Farm

Khorat, Thailand is a city I know well. I lived there during my last year with the U.S. Air Force. Less than a year later when I returned as a civilian it had taken on a whole new complexion. There was still a presence of Air Force personnel, albeit small in numbers. They had had a good run since the 1960's when the U.S. first got involved in Southeast Asia. Logistical operations for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos were coordinated through the Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group (JUSMAG), which was located in Bangkok and executed from U.S. bases inside the country. My senses were alerted to a subtle odor. Hmm…smells like some kind of animal shit, I thought to myself. A short while later we reached the bungalow and the stairs leading up to a small porch. Noi turned and whispered in my ear, “Shh, quiet...family sleep.” What a shocker that was! It was the last thing I had expected to hear. And she wants me to go inside? And how was this supposed to happen without awakening everyone? But her body language spoke differently as she grabbed my hand and we quickly ascended the steps. My heart was racing as I too stepped out of my flip-flops as we began our silent assault into the dark bungalow. I was starting to question this heaven and hell lyric but decided it was too late to turn back. With Noi leading me by the hand we quietly made our way across the smooth wooden planked floor of the open living room, past her family members comfortably asleep inside their mosquito net and down the dark hallway. Stopping in front of a closed door she gently pushed it open and we entered. Through an open window the moonlight spread across the room like long shadowy fingers and in the corner suspended from the ceiling was a mosquito net that shrouded a mattress which lay on the …show more content…
I watched while they whispered to each other. What was said I would never know. Noi slid out of her clothes in a matter of seconds, then both she and her sister turned their attention to me. It seemed like everything was in slow motion...they removed my clothes, neatly folding and placing them at the foot of the mattress. Lying back I felt the embrace of the soft pillow and the lyrics once again invaded my thoughts but this time, it was only this could be heaven! What seemed like a dream, and an eternity later I was completely dressed. With Noi by my side clutching my hand she led me back down the dark hallway, through the living area past her family, out onto the porch and into the bright beaming moonlight. Noi gently pulled my face close to hers and peering into my eyes she pressed her nose against my cheek. With a light “sniff” she left me with a soft kiss and that same seductive smile that first captivated me back at the Oasis Bar. The moonlight melted to liquid on her lips and in the sphere of her large eyes. She turned and silently disappeared back into the

We walked towards the back of the house with the boards screeching and bending under our feet.…
