The first time I saw a sky full of stars and allowed the fresh, pollution-free air to invigorate my lungs and my mind. The first time I gossiped with one of my teachers and discussed conventional methods of education with a twelve year old. The city girl who had studied in a conventional school all her life started observing qualities in nature and people of all age groups. There was something to learn from the sacred fig trees that showered relief from the sweltering heat and the eight year old boy who was ecstatic about the colours that spread to his fingers from a butterfly’s wings. This approach provoked me to think about why I am attending school, why I want to attend college or why music is such an integral part of my life. Every step I have taken towards answering these questions have essentially led me to a common answer: self discovery. Every time I competed with my peers, I recognised my strengths and weaknesses better. I realised that competition was within myself, to prove to myself that I was a person of potential. With each song I wrote, I was stripping myself emotionally bare. My inhibitions and insecurities became clearer to me. With every performance that my teachers and peers at school pushed me to do, I was able to face and tackle my numbing stage fear. My initial inability to smile on stage eliminated itself with practise and experience. Today I am able to laugh to my heart’s content and share my happiness with the
