He says he didn't want to use a wheelchair, stating, ''I mean that's for old people and disabled people, and I'm not one of them'' (The Open University, 2018a). As a wheelchair user Stephen Sweetman has found difficulties and inequalities that didn't present themselves to him as a non-disabled people, such as uneven paving slabs, a tilting of the path, and difficulties in locating drop kerbs. Through the support of his family he began to reconnect with his own body and with society, and form connections with the disabled community. Stephen has become involved in disability issues and works toward making life better for the future…
In this paper, I will be explaining the argument of Elizabeth Barnes on her mere-difference of disability and whether it implies certain moral claims. Social constructivism describes that a person is considered disabled because of a contingently deep, intersubjective reality that shapes a person’s social world. Barnes argues that disability is intersubjective because whether a person is regarded to have a physical illness is not socially constructed, but rather a matter of biological fact. A person is determined to have a disability simply based on social construction. An example of a social construction is currency printed on paper.…

Disability is an everlasting problem not only in Canada, but also in other countries. As a well-developed country, Canada should take the leading role to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities and promote more social, economic opportunities for them. These disabled people were differentiated in terms of intensity of disability (mild, moderate, severe and very severe) depends on the frequency and severity of the limitations correlated with their impairments.…

My father once told me that in order to become a man you must go through some obstacles in life. As I look to the north I can see that this is going to be the biggest obstacle I will face! The clouds got darker and darker by the minute. I thought it was just me but my friend ,Howard, saw it too. I blinked twice a whirl of air hit my face and all I hear is “TORNADO”,!…
A Deaf Event I took an American Sign Language class last semester, Fall2014 at San Bernardino Valley College. The teacher had us choose an event to attend for a quiz grade. She had given us many events to choose from. The one I chose was Barnes and Noble “ASL story signing.” I had chosen this event because it was the only one that worked with my schedule and also because the story signing was being told by deaf/hearing impaired children.…
The act that made one of the biggest impacts on disabled people's lives was The American with Disabilities Act of 1990. “The American with Disabilities Act represents the latest and most comprehensive effort to fight discrimination against disability in the United States” ( Mezey, 2009). It included stopping the discrimination against disabled people on the basis of education, employment, transportation, public events, and access to state and local governments programs and services. The first major civil rights law passed since the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the ADA was estimated to affect the lives of 43 million Americans at the time of its passage “(Mezey, 2009).…
For the past five years I have worked with adults with learning disability supporting them to leave independently in their homes and to access their local communities in some cases using my car to do so. For example I work with this elderly gentleman who leaves on his own but needs support with personal care and general house chores. As part of a team, I have supported this gentleman to shower and dress in the morning and evenings making sure that he takes his medication. Also I support him at teatime to prepare meals, with much emphasis on a healthy diet, which helps his health conditions. Moreover, I work closely with the dietician and the learning disability nurse; this enables me to give a coordinated support which is guided by his care…
My world is small, average, protected, predictable. I have been blessed with that. My parents have given me their every breath to make it so. Up until this point in my life I have taken advantage of that luxury and have tried to escape it. Well, I’m still trying to escape it.…
The REACH Program Students with intellectual or developmental disabilities can go to college! Why should students with disabilities go to college? Every student has experienced a time when they struggled in school, whether they had a difficult time grasping a concept, had trouble answering a question or was unsure how to study for an exam. These are common struggles that many students face when they are in elementary school, high school, college, and even graduate school. However, being the one student that encounters all those difficulties altogether, make it very challenging to achieve in school, especially when they are stigmatized for having a learning disability. Students with learning disabilities can either have a negative or positive school experience based on the attitudes and behaviors of their fellow classmates and teachers. These students often have negative school experiences…
