We weren't sure if we LOVED IT, so we went and had breakfast to think about this purchase. We decided that we'd buy it if it was still there, and it was after several hours. We managed to squeeze it into our trunk with a the help of a random stranger, who used his new to him belt that he just bought to help tie it down. When I offered him money, he refused and went on his way. We got the chair home, and Chauncey was totally oblivious to it.Now, prior to the chair arriving Chauncey used to sleep with me until Rob came to bed. Chauncey and I both sleep like the dead and where we live is very quiet. One night,

Chicano/a/xs in the United States experienced racial discrimination through regional segregation, marginalization in suburbia, and construction of a selective fantasy past. This relationship between space, cultural citizenship, and race relations were apparent in the unequal opportunities and the marginalization Latinos faced in racialized suburbia. An imagined Spanish fantasy past was constructed through mission revival and Olvera Street in Los Angeles that placed the Mexican people and their culture in the past. It was implied that the only place for them in modern day Los Angeles was in the past, supporting the belief that the Mexican immigrants in the present were not a part of the Los Angeles community and were just a temporary workforce in America. This further emphasizes this racial segregation they faced from the Anglo community who constructed a physical…

On September 15, I went and took part in el Grito ceremony held at the Miller Outdoor Theater to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day. I did not know what was el Grito, so I went to that event with an open mind. The show came after a long speech in both Spanish and English about the Mexican community in Houston and the impact of Harvey on the community. I really enjoy the sense of community that I experienced during that event. People came as a family or with a group of friends.…

Supreme Court Justice and Latina woman, Sonia Sotomayor once stated, “The Latina in me is an ember that blazes forever.” After given much thought on what it means to be an Idaho Latina, I could not think of how to describe the feeling or how one thinks, acts, and lives. I feel like I haven’t found my place in the Hispanic population in school even though I am full Hispanic. I don’t speak Spanish fluently, I am at a different academic level than other Hispanics, and I have different interests. Yet the “ember still burns inside me”, thanks to my padres and my abuelos I know what is like to be an Idahoan Latina.…

Writing Sample Without a doubt in my mind the best class I have taken in the past two years of my academia was my high school Spanish class. I developed a very good relationship with my instructor Sr. K, that was probably the biggest reason it was my favorite class; However, the way his class was stuctured and how he taught contributed it to being my favorite class in the last two years. We would always start the day with a class plan so everyone would know what was going to take place in class and the next. Sr. k was very detailed in lessons…

My summer at CDJ was a learning experience in every sense of the word. Every day I learned something new, whether it be a life lesson, general fact, and about the medical system or a new friend. One of my first lessons at Casa Juan Diego was solemn: not everyone can be helped, but you help all those you can. I learned this my first few weeks at Casa, when we were faced with a shortage of housing space. An influx of Cuban immigrants was arriving, which lead to overcrowding and full capacity while people waited outside.…

The Story of Pedro Serrano, as told by el Inca, Garcilaso de la Vega, had a deep impact on me. More specifically, the part that was most was the first interaction between Serrano, the main character, and the other unnamed survivor that was introduced halfway through the short story. Serrano had been stranded on the island for three years and had acquired hair all over—so much so, that it was compared by de la Vega to “an animal’s pelt.” The new survivor on the island was still dressed as a normal Spanish sailor, whereas Serrano had seemed to morph into a different person all together—one who was as mentally unstable as he was physically. When these two very different characters met for the first time, they were both shocked.…
