Driver’s Ed is meant to teach young drivers how to act behind the wheel and the ins and outs of driving. However, Driver’s Ed is not meant to be fun by any means. I found this out the hard way when I took Driver’s Ed last summer. It took all of my strength, will-power and endurance to make it through one of the most boring weeks of my entire life. The whole story begins with my older brother. He did not take Driver’s Ed, he learned how to drive through experience. The problem was, he had already gotten in two accidents during his first three months of driving, costing my parents a large amount of money. Each student received a booklet with all of Nebraska’s State ordinances involving driving. Our instructor then read each one very slowly, I would rather listen to a cheese grater sliding against a chalkboard. The next few days went by without any incident, but still extremely tedious. Then, Friday came. Friday was the big test day. When I entered the classroom, I overheard some of my peers lament about how tired they were from staying up so late trying to study. I was confident that I would do great, and yet a small part of me was still nervous that I would fail. When our instructor handed out the tests only the sound of pencil scratching paper could be heard. When we completed our tests we were allowed to leave, so when I finished mine I was out in a flash. Later that night, I went back to the SCC campus to take the driving portion of the test. Even though I made few sharp turns and had a bad grip on the wheel, I still passed with one of the best scores possible. Finally, It was over. I didn’t have to go back into that cramped classroom. I didn’t have to listen to my instructor’s droning voice. Most importantly, however, I didn’t have to take Driver’s Ed ever again. I was free. The joy I felt cannot be expressed in words. It was the happiest I’ve been in a long
