I attended public school at first, and I was the new kid again. But this time the kids did not include me. While eventually I found a group of people who let me in, they often mocked me. This area of Illinois has a lot of racism, including against Jews. My family practices whole bible Christianity, and we call ourselves Messianic. When people looked it up the first thing they saw: Messianic Jew. People thought I was a Jew, so I was picked on every day, also painful and unfair.
Some people use racism as a joke, and they use it to make people laugh. The people who do it on accident do not mean it. My younger brother once went up to my African American friend and said, “You are the only brown friend I have.” My friend then took me aside and said, “Your brother is racist.” I told him that my brother did not know better. However, some people do know better. These people hurt others on purpose, but my brother did it on accident.
Discrimination and racism happen all around the world, on purpose or on accident. Sometimes I have been able to stop discrimination and racism and work everything out like with my brother. Other times I told how I felt about how everyone acted around me so some stopped. Occasionally, though, when I try to defend someone I get made fun of, too. It is hard.
