Personal Narrative: Dicey Debates

Improved Essays

Parker argues that we are being taught shortcuts, which will alter the bigger picture later on in life. I do agree with Parkers general statement and believe she’s presented this notion greatly. Parker opens the article with solid emotional appeal, joking that “using grammar was the eight deadly sin in my childhood home”.…

While I didn’t feel comfortable with basic grammatical rules until well through high school, Joanna made me comfortable with my ideas and what I had to say. It may be a stretch to think she was using natural metaphors to inspire her fourth grade students to be better writers, however, assuming this connection is what helped me improve my writing ability as I tried to grow as a student. Although I still often struggle with the confidence of comma use, or repeating my ideas, I hope to incorporate this naturalistic flow of writing into my work. Now I know that a comma is a “punctuation mark indicating a pause between parts of a sentence”, but to me it will always represent the change in direction of a stream, or the hesitation of the breeze that guides a falling leaf. Growing up, I noticed, when approached with conflict, my sisters and my mother would often state that they did not want to talk about it or would simply leave the room. I now have a phrase for this: the exit response. For us, the exit response was always temporary. If the problem was serious, it would eventually be brought back up; if it wasn’t, then things usually got better on its own. While my dad is often the first to use the voice response, I have noticed that my dad often chooses the loyalty response, too.…
