I came across a seemingly simple question.
Is Idolatry a thing of the past or as ubiquitous as ever?
Idolatry is worship of an Idol. A form of extreme admiration, love or reverence for someone or something. It usually done in religious practice but spills out into much of society.

Some warn against praying or worshiping a symbol of your Deity in its place. While others adorn everything including vehicles with crucifixes and "NOTW" decals.
Idolatry is not only tied to theology or materialism. As in being trapped in a unfulfilled quest to own material things like a collection.
We tend to imitate to learn and understanding our environment. This is why we need someone we can trust to tell us what to do or buy. These individuals are around more today then every before. We call them celebrities.
These Idols can be used to control and influence large numbers of people.
While this might sound like a tribe hidden in the Amazon. (The real one not the website.) The point is that this control and influence is alive an well today. Why do you think we even know anything about the Kardashian family? The are entire networks that revolve around "following" these people.
There are healthy ways to learn from people. Regardless of who information is coming from we must never shut of our critical thinking. After all it would be blind submission and obedience on someone that only cares about you because you give them something they want. Be it money, fame, or power of
