Crazy men in the streets of Marshall

Everyone people watches. Even if you don’t mean to we all do it. There is a bunch of weird people in the world and its hard to miss them. One thing I’ve noticed since I got here in Marshall Texas is that there is always people in the streets. I’m not only talking about homeless people, just normal people who just stand along the road and outside of stores and on a front porch of some old house. I never really saw any of that from where I come from. Where I come from there’s not many people in the streets. During the day you will see kids playing out in their front yards but come nighttime everyone’s gone. Probably because of a curfew. The other day I was driving home, coming back at about 2:30. Right as I got into Marshall I saw a man with a shopping cart and shorts and no t-shirt on. At first I thought he was homeless but the closer I looked at him I realized he wasn’t. I

He looked at me as if I was the weird one. Like me being out was weird. It made me think as I passed him. What was so weird about me that made him look at me the way he did. I feel as though he gave me the same look I gave him as I passed by him. So who was the weird one? Who was the “normal” one? “Having Been in high school I used to hear “she’s weird” or “that’s weird.” I always like to ask why. What makes something or someone weird or normal? Something is weird when it breaks societal norms. For example, if someone puts his hand over his mouth while talking , you would probably consider that trait as weird but not that person. But why? Because people don’t normally put their hands over their mouths while talking.
A good way to illustrate this point is to look at different cultures. What’s weird in one, may be the norm in the other or vice versa. For instance, slurping your noodles or soup would be considered weird in the United States, but not slurping could be weird or offensive in some Asian countries.”

We as human beings live together in large groups who follow certain rules and regulations, both written and simply unspoken but known. Most of these rules we just accept for what they are and do not really pay much attention to them. We go along with what “the norm” is for life because it is easier to live that way rather than challenging how things work. However, if we take the time to sit and really think about what is socially acceptable and what is not, some may begin to question the fairness and legitimacy of these rules. How we interact with other groups of people is a great example of what is sometimes socially acceptable but morally wrong.…

What I would like to know is when this became a normalcy and who let it become one? Homeless people have always had a stigma attached to them; people seem to assume being homeless means you’re a stinky old convict on the streets prowling for victims when they are really just everyday citizens forced into situations that they can’t…

People coming from a different planet would think every day things we do in life are weird. What we have adapted to and think are normal look very weird to others who haven’t seen people doing things like this. Such as someone who has never shaved before would think that is very odd to shave your beard. Or someone who has never seen a drive threw would think it’s weird to have people have food handed out the window. As we think other cultures are weird we have to look at the fact that our culture is weird to others People that have never seen basketball would thing it is a bunch of people running around with a ball.…

Dorothy Day and her family “had no philosophy of poverty.” Dorothy and her family didn’t think down upon those who were less fortunate but they took each situation as an opportunity to help someone in need. They did not “deprive [themselves] in order to help others.” It seems to me that this kind of behavior isn’t practiced much in our time as it used to be. Some people now days look down on the less fortunate and are disgusted, their first thoughts are to avoid them.…

    H. Jackson Brown, Jr. once said, “Love is when the other person’s happiness is more important than your own.” When I was seven years old, I watched my mom and dad argue in the middle of a parking lot. The next morning, I discovered my dad’s belongings and car were gone. I did not realize this at the time, but my parents separated that day. Through their separation, I learned that I do not need my dad, his happiness was not more important than mine, and that he did not love me.…

I live in the “ghetto,” or at least that’s the notion I received when I first moved into my neighborhood. The houses are old and it’s never quiet, I sleep with my sister in a small bedroom, getting up early every morning and seeing the drunken people from last night’s parties. The challenges I faced on a daily bases was the low income me and my family had to survive on. My parents worked day and night just to get food on the table and pay the bills. I knew that this wasn’t the life I wanted.…

It seems that many among us view the homeless as a peril to society. They lie on sidewalks and roam aimlessly on the streets in the bitter cold and extreme heat. Some may panhandle for money but others also work , attend school and worship with us yet they are not seen. The middle class and wealthy step around them and walk by them like they are invisible. The homeless are ignored, looked down upon and are stereotyped and judged.…
