Day 77 Monday Assekrem

Tall and striking, his face iron oxide framed by an indigo cheche, Cher strides to meet the four of us, his Range Rover ready at the gate of the campground, a guerba, the usual goatskin full of water, strapped to the side of this four-wheel drive.

Soon, with Cher driving fast but skilfully, we follow a desert track towards the rocky outcrops of the Hoggar. When we detour to a natural rock formation that forms a rain-filled cistern, I am surprised to see so much water, especially as Cher says that it hasn’t really rained here for a couple of years.

A heavy sigh echoed though the small dank space, followed by a low humorless laugh. Oliver carefully shifted his precarious footing in the soft muck beneath the dark murky water, grimacing as the mud oozed deeper into his boots. He raised his eyes toward the circle of dim light a mere five feet beyond his reach. His eyes lowered to study the wall of algae covered green stones that lined the well shaft…well that had lined most of the shaft. An angry scar of exposed red clay marred a large portion of the wall above where he had attempted to climb out nearly a half hour earlier, the missing stones lost somewhere in the ice cold water below.…

It’s nothing but a vast deposit of salt and minerals that have run down from the canyon sides. The Basin is two-hundred-seventy-nine feet below sea level, or about ninety three yards. At first glance, it appears as if the Valley finally received some snow. The monochromatic ground is only distinguishable by its varying textures. Some areas look like the doing of a six-year old who rummaged the recycling bin: hexagonal Styrofoam plates, arrayed like tiles, are grouted together by shaving cream.…

Introduction: In “The Way to Rainy Mountain” N. Scott Momaday discusses his personal as well as cultural background, as he takes a trip to visit Rainy Mountain after his grandmother has passed away. Momaday’s grandmother, Aho, was one of the last living members of the Kiowa tribe to recall the way of life that the Kiowa lived. Therefore, as Momaday roams around Rainy Mountain he must rely on all the stories his grandmother told him in order to keep the Kiowa history alive. One story told how the tribe came to be through a hollow log, meanwhile another told how the tribe died out because of the lack of buffalo.…

My interest in child poverty persistence dates back to my childhood. Growing up in Liberia and acclimating to America as a first generation refugee, I can assuredly communicate the difficulty experiences of children from impoverished families. In Liberia, I lived in a two-bedroom tent with 10 relatives, we owned nothing and when a civil war arrived, we lost families and the tent. While coming to America, two out of the 14 relatives that applied were selected from the immigration process. My father, grandfather and I came with the clothes on our backs.…

14.7 million children live in poverty. I am one of them. And yet, no one seems to notice me or care. I’m just another piece of garbage in the street, just another thin, starved child that is above the notice of anyone. I wish tears could change my life, as if they could somehow wash out the hurt, and pain, as if they could drown the struggle.…

When stuck between fighting and fleeing, it can become difficult to choose. This is the main theme of the story “On The Rainy River”, written by Tim O’Brien, which recalls the events and struggles from when he was drafted to fight in the Vietnam War. Applying a biographical lens to Tim O’Brien’s “On The Rainy River” reveals the relationship between how the narrator’s story can relate to Tim O’Brien’s life. The word feral is defined as something wild. When we think about the word wild, we tend to think of something that is untamed, or not cultivated. A feral child, on the other hand, is a label for those human children who grew up in isolation, and had no human contact from a very young age. These children are seen being raised up by animals because they were left abandoned and as a result, they have little or no experience of human care, behavior, or of human language. Many assume that writers and other people with vivid imaginations make up fictional stories about children raised by animals, unfortunately; indeed it is a fact in history that these children exist.…
