I was asked to discuss a defining moment in my life. After looking back and having many, the most life changing and influential moment in my short life was the move from San Diego, California to Providence, Rhode island. My Mother, Brother, and I moved to New England in the spring of 2013. The reason for the move was the decision by my Mother to live with her current fiance. This came about by a childhood sweetheart relationship that was started back up twenty years later. This life changing

I then started my new life on the east coast. The first thing I thought about was what the kids were like that I would be going to school with. I wondered when I would make new friends and if I would relate with them. Would I get along with my new family? Would they like me? I was also far from home and felt homesick as well. I missed my family and friends in California. The weather was suprisingly more extreme and I noticed a lot more snow than what I expected. Actually, there was three feet of snow the first winter. The schools are much larger here. The schools are all made of red brick with high ceilings and hold more students. I noticed the culture was different here especially the kids at school. The children in my grade school were much more diverse compared to the kids in my school in San Diego. Other small characteristics of the North East I became aware of are differences in food, clothing and the overall manners of the people and how they look. After a time here I realized the change in food was worth trying. I like the small family owned restaurants and love Italian food. I had never had this type of food back home. Also, since being here I have learned how to use chopsticks by my Step Father who likes chinese food. Overall foods …show more content…
The fashion is different for the kids my age, Back in San Diego the kids wore less expensive lighter clothes geared towards beachwear. Here the kids wear heavier clothes more jeans and more towards grunge wear. The people here seem to be much taller than average, So I felt short. The kids are also much louder and talkative. Adults drive faster and get angrier on the road and are always in a rush from what I initially saw. It was just a first impression. As I stayed longer this was an incorrect first impression and I learned that different cultures and people from different areas express and act in different ways. I found myself slowly liking people, understanding certain ways, liking the food and adapting to a new society and its

Have you ever stopped caring so much that whatever happens, happens? I remember the time I had gotten in trouble by my mom because I had walked home from school. I didn’t like it, but then again I started not to care either.…

Not me I chose Tyler, Tx and the stress of taking care of my mom, sister and helping with my 15 month old nephew. When you're nineteen years old and have all this responsibility to make money, go to school full time and still try to live a young adult life is unfortunate. In San Diego people tend to have a more open mind-set. This is because there are more people and they are not all the same. They have more “types” of people out there than in a small town of six hundred people. But people can still be the same depending on who you meet. If you move to a new place you will still see some of the same stereotypes.…

Growing up in a military family I have been fortunate enough to have been exposed to a variety of different places in the United States, each more unique in diversity than the next. I spent most of my adolescence living on military bases up and down the east coast. I traveled with my family for ten or so years before settling in one place to go to college. In my traveling time, I experienced the cultures in different states and different types of areas from urban to suburban to rural. My experiences as a military kid on the move have shaped my opinions on teaching and directed me to the type of teacher that I want to be.…

In the book “The Other Wes Moore”, the four main concepts that can affect an individual’s life path is environment, personal responsibility, influence, and expectations. Environment and influences are related to each other because different environments have positive and negative influences within them. Personal responsibilities can vary greatly from person to person; some learn responsibility at a young age by doing chores or younger siblings while others never learn to take responsibilities for themselves or their actions. Then, expectations can be what individuals expect from themselves or what others around them expect them to do. However, I believe the four main concepts that shape a person’s direction of life are common sense, new environments,…

"We're Moving to The United States". With those words my world was changed upside down in an instant. Having packed my bags and gotten on a plane in the space of a few days, I was whisked across the world from England to The US to start my new life. Quite a life changing experience for a child, although it was one that was definitely not regretful. Moving to the United States has given me a much vaster view on the perspective on the world and how different cultures, even two Western one can clash so dramatically.…

You would think that death would devastate someone for the rest of their life, but my brother’s death actually changed my life. I’m not saying that his death didn’t have a negative effect on me, but it had more of a positive effect on me than anything. These last few months, I’ve been thinking a lot about growing up. As a junior in high school, I’m just starting to consider what colleges I want to apply to and careers I want to explore. Thinking ahead five years is not very uncommon during this point in my life, and I’ve had plenty of time to think about the changes that becoming an adult will bring about. Hopefully, most of these changes will be for the better as I move forward to achieve my goals. Living on my own.…
