Big Horse, Small Patients

"If you fall and shed a tear. I'll sell the horse." My dad has said this to me ever since I was seven years old, that is when he first taught me to ride a horse. There has been many times that I have wanted to cry but choose not too. Just last year, my little sister, Chloe, wanted me to teach her how to ride a horse. We did not know what the outcome would be but I told her that I would teach her. She asked me to teach her when we were feeding the horses last May. It was a bright, warm, sunny day. We were walking back from the pasture when she said, "Jessica. I would like it if you would teach me how to ride a horse." So I told her that we would ask dad if it would be alright if I taught her, so after

Every little girl grows up loving horses, but most outgrow that desire. I never did. When I was young, I was scared of them because the first horse I fed a carrot to looked as though he could eat me. I was 4 years old and also the size of his head. For the longest time, I wished to ride and train horses even though I did not know a single thing about doing that; today, I teach other people more about how horses work within their herd and how humans can better work with their horse.…

After looking at my involvement in clubs, organizations, and community activities list, someone may infer that I am heavily involved in equine related activities. Throughout my life, I have gained an extreme fondness and passion for horses, the training of horses, and barrel racing. The ownership of horses has taught me many important qualities such as responsibility, putting other’s needs before my own, patience, compassion, and respect. Training horses can be a very time consuming, and sometimes aggravating process, but it has become one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I have learned that patience is always required for a great outcome, and to never forget to reward small stepping stones.…

Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

No matter what else I have on my plate, I know that my horse won't take care of himself. That means waking up extra early before school and stumbling out the door, half asleep to feed the horses and clean the barn even if I didn't feel like it. The kind of dependence that my horses have on me has taught me a level of commitment that I personally believe can't be matched by any other experience. Horses have also taught me to be flexible and have given me a great deal of patience. I've had the privilege to ride and work with many horses since I started riding and if nothing else, it has shown me that nothing works all…

Susan corrected my posture patiently and was encouraging throughout our lessons.…

I’ve realized in my lifetime that saddling a horse that you are going to ride is not as natural of an act to other people as it is to me. Since the moment I had both the strength and height to lift my own tiny saddle up to the back of my animal, I was saddling by myself. These days in the time that I set aside to ride, I don’t even think about the act of saddling, I could almost finish the act blindfolded. In my realization that not all people know how to saddle a horse and if they have an idea it may not be the proper way, I decided to share my knowledge in this area with others.…
