Personal Narrative: Being Out On The Road

I first realized I was in foreign territory when I witnessed my boss take a drag of a marijuana joint, take a shot of whiskey and walk out of the bar with a girl he had just met at our show. Suddenly, I was thrust into a world I had never experienced before. I was merely a boy surrounded by middle-aged men, who were seasoned veterans in the field of musical touring. The closest person to myself in age was 10 years my elder. I had not known the hardships I would soon be witnessing while out on the road. The trials and tribulations that presented themselves to me, made me grow from a boy to a man, and ultimately eliminate what innocence I had left. I managed to land a merchandising gig touring with a musical act from the city of Austin. Through mutual friends and business associates help, I was able to beat out candidates that were vastly more qualified than I. At the time of my hiring, I was a fresh faced eighteen year old kid. When I learned I had landed the job all I could think about was the excitement of being out on the road. My excitement quickly turned to disappointment on …show more content…
Any innocence I had left, was gone following my time traveling with the band. Actions and behavior I had only seen in movies and heard in songs had eroded my mental state. As I stated in the last paragraph, I believe the involvement of children and wives is what pushed my moral capacity over the edge. The perception of the actions taken by the guys would have changed had they been single and in their early twenties. However, these were grown men committing these acts against the very people they claimed to love. As I parted ways with the band I took with me jadedness on my outlook of the world. It was hard for me to understand or comprehend some of the actions and decisions I had to unexpectedly face, when I accepted the job I was so eager to

On May 9, 2015, Garvey’s Advanced Band and Mustang Choir went to the Trills and Thrills Festival at Burbank Middle School. We had to be at school by 7:15 AM since it was our call time, and that was way too early for me since I usually sleep at 12 AM. I was in Advanced Band and I played the clarinet. Of course I was excited to play at the competition, but I was also nervous since we were going to Six Flags afterwards and I had a huge fear of heights.…

My Ride-A-long was on Tuesday, November 28th from 7:00 am to 14:00 pm with the Police Officer Morton Campbell. When I got to the police department I had to wait for Officer Campbell for an hour. I took advantage of the moment and the Officer Jose Garcia took me to a mini tour of the area. During the wait a citizen came to make a report, Officer Garcia did not use codes but asked her some questions and said it was a lost property report. She went to report that she had lost her wallet, she had forgotten it on the bus, she realized that she had lost it a day later and she waited a week to report it.…

Donald M. Murray’s memoir, “The Stranger in the Photo Is Me,” ascertains the idea that life changes as we change. He explicitly enforces this idea by inundating his audience with his impactful usage of both antithesis and juxtapositions to express his belief of innocence versus experience. Murray narrows the idea of innocence versus experience by ultimately speaking on his positive self versus what has happened in the intervening years, and how once he became older, he became much more aware of what has happened. As Murray goes deeper into his argument, his use of antithesis and juxtapositions become clear during his shift from alluding to memories in his younger age to transforming into someone he never thought he would become, and ultimately referring to himself as a “stranger.”…

After five hours under Mrs. Gonzalez’s 1997 Plymouth, my hands were so dirty I had to wash them ten times just to see my fingernails again. She was a familiar face around the shop, given that neighborhood thieves had routinely targeted her car. This time, though, they had gone too far. Someone had crawled underneath the car and cut out the valuable catalytic converter, and she couldn’t afford a replacement. When I looked at her and said, “That’ll be $563,” her face turned pale.…

The booming voice called out for my little family of four to board our plane, a plane that would take us to the depths of a mysterious alien world. Or at least that’s what little six-year-old me thought when I left my home country of Cuba to come to the United States. That was a time of emotional turmoil for me, feeling the pain of leaving everything and everyone I knew behind. There was the excitement and fear of coming to a new unknown place, but there was also a feeling of dread at this vast language barrier that I was facing, and finally accepting and adapting to this new life. Coming from Cuba was a difficult experience that helped me grow and learn.…

I never understood until that night why I was different, but for whatever reason, to be a rebel I was. That night I lay in my brother’s bed, the smell of his worn out cologne used over and over again on the pillow, a younger image of him pinched between the wood and the mirror, the TV on a wooden stand drained out of its brown color facing me, and my back against the door. It didn’t mean anything. I was home in my home, my back against the door, shielded from the outside world.…

Soon, those drums were tucked away at the sight of familiar faces that had become a second home of mine, and this new, unchartered territory did not seem as terrifying. Along with those same faces that held my fear duplicated that first day, were now fears transferred to my success and, fearfully, failures. Constant thoughts of failure that swarmed my mind. I never knew what was worse, the pain of possible failure, or of disappointment from subject facilitators, parents, relatives, etc.…

The road most people in my community go down you shouldn't expect me to writing this. My family doesn't have the most money in the world and we don't have the most opportunities here. My hometown is one of the poorest in the country and many people would expect me to just quit school and get a job to support my family, but that was not the case with me. I pushed myself to achieve something greater than what others around me have done. I didn't want to fall into the stereotype that because I am part Mexican I’m lazy or just another trouble maker because I'm not that!…

It was the summer of 2007, and my parents thought that it would be a brilliant idea to go on a family road trip to some unknown location. This was the summer before I started high school and I wasn’t in the family bonding mood for a day let alone two weeks. With me being an only child, grandchild, and great grandchild, I was the only kid with five adults in a minivan. Why my parents thought that this was a good idea is still beyond my imagination.…

It all started in seventh grade. I had just finished after school choir practice and was riding my bike home when, as I was crossing the street a car came around the bend really fast and didn’t look around and it hit me and ran over my legs. I was so scared at first I thought they were broken because I could not feel them. The lady who had hit me called the ambulance and my parents, and then I was taken to the hospital. While at the hospital I had to get x-rays done to make sure that my legs were not broken, which they weren't.…
