Have you ever stopped caring so much that whatever happens, happens? I remember the time I had gotten in trouble by my mom because I had walked home from school. It was a gloomy day from it being so cloudy and cold. I was talked into walking home during school by friends whom, at the time didn't care about school as much as I did, cared nothing of school. I didn’t like it, but then again I started not to care either.…

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

My father has been in the military for 30 years. His career has taken him and my family, to every corner of the world. The Air Force is a demanding career path to choose; often the spouse is left with the full weight of the chores to be done on the home front. During the course of my upbringing these duties were, in part, delegated to my sisters and I. While we never experienced “a life of almost tropical idleness’ (CITATION) like the children of Jane Smiley, we became effective and efficient members of our house hold. We learned to respect our house and our family.…

Though I’m still developing my legacy, I like to think that most people who know me, regardless of how well, consider me a person that can put a smile on nearly any face. From my time in high school as photo studio assistant getting babies to giggle on camera to my work as a personal trainer cracking jokes to help clients through the worst parts of their workouts; I learned that a little laughter can improve any situation. While this is a fairly simple impact to have on people, I do believe that it’s a powerful one. My own experiences with bereavement, chronic ill health and periods of poor mental health have shown me the value of a person that puts in the effort and time to get a smile out of someone. Though happiness is a pretty fleeting…

My Birth Story Birth stories have a lasting impact on expectant mothers. Recognizing the influence of birth stories is a key component of informal communication of knowledge about childbirth for expectant mothers. The goals of the birth story interview and discussion are to provide an opportunity to explore the sharing of a birth story as a critical way of knowing within the family and community, and also to promote understanding of the prenatal period and taking-on of the parental role. There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…
