Personal Narrative: Basketball

Improved Essays
Basketball has always been my best sport. I started playing in the ninth grade, and everything was going great with practices and playing, except for one game
Then everything changed.
It all started on game day, in the big gymnasium. Freshman games usually do not have a lot of people compared to varsity, but they were still very nerve wrecking.
“Hustle in boys!” our coach shouted. “Deandre, I want you guarding 11,” he demanded.
Quickly, the team ran back to the court, and went into position. The whistle blew and everyone sprung into action. Our team started on defense, the other team took a shot, but the ball bounced off the rim. I jumped up in the air to grab the ball. “Go Deandre, Go!” I could hear being shouted in the background.

The shot clock went off and before you knew it we had lost. The Huskies actually lost in the championship, and unable to go undefeated for another season. We were shocked, some of us even in tears. We saw the Heat hold the trophy as we received our 2nd place medals, which meant nothing coming from winning so much. We walked out of that gym with our heads down and in disbelief.…

My hands gripped my lacrosse stick tightly and my eyes stared at the ball, which was trapped between two girls. I waited. I waited for the whistle to sound and the ball to fly in the air, the yellow of it vanishing into the sun. I was ready. People coming from a different planet would think every day things we do in life are weird. What we have adapted to and think are normal look very weird to others who haven’t seen people doing things like this. Such as someone who has never shaved before would think that is very odd to shave your beard. Or someone who has never seen a drive threw would think it’s weird to have people have food handed out the window. As we think other cultures are weird we have to look at the fact that our culture is weird to others People that have never seen basketball would thing it is a bunch of people running around with a ball.…

Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

My very first organized basketball game, three years ago, I was a scared, nervous, and excited mess. Wait, let's backtrack to weeks before the game. The level of anticipation among my team for the first game was sky-high. Our team, Purdue, hadn't known each other at all before we were grouped together. Over a span of a few brief weeks, we became quite close.…

What basketball means to me is family, friends and heritage. Everything so basketball kind of means a lot to me. Although the point of the game is to have fun, I know a lot of times when I wanted to win. One time I was at a rez ball tournament in Reno and my team had already lost one game and we weren’t planning on going home early, so we tried so hard to get up, and we did only one point down and 3 minutes to go. We brought the ball up the court passed it around and got a shot up.…

The squeaking of shoes on the newly cleaned, glossy court floorboards. My heart pounding in my chest ready to burst out at any moment, what looked like hundreds of people; actually only a few, but the fact that I've never done this before had me trembling in my knees. My palms started sweating, and my breathing began to shallow. I have to prove them wrong, but could I? I won’t let them tell me these negative things anymore, not anymore anyways.…

The first time I learned basketball was when I am at the 6th grade when my physical education teacher registered me in a basketball summer camp. I used to be a shy and quiet girl but since joining the summer camp I started to socialize and have friends. After two months of learning basketball, I began to like it. Then, I started playing basketball in high school as part of my school’s team and I’ve been playing ever since. It started out as just an activity, and then became a hobby that’s something fun to do but later on, I found that I really like basketball.…
